sore on right side of the throat
Hello all,
I am trying to figure out if what I have is viral or
bacterial. I have been ill for 7 days. Started out with a
fever then turned into a general bad sore throat. after 4
days, the fever went away and the sore throat moved to the
right. Also, about that same time, I started having mostly
dry coughing fits when lying down, slight ear pressure,
and nasal congestion on the right side. Now the coughing
has mostly stopped and i'm left with sinus congestion,
painful sore throat, and slight ear pressure all on ONLY
the right side of my face and throat. I don't have
insurance at this point, so I am trying to avoid seeing a
doctor. But I am under the impression that the congestion,
cough, and sore throat on only one side means this is not
strep. Could I be wrong?
also, I can't seem to tell if my lymph nodes are sore. they
seem kinda sore but then i think i might just be imagining
it. also, no white spots in the throat. just a lot of red.
Please Help!

I appreciate that you are in a bad position with having to
pay for all your health care, but a good rule of thumb is
that if you have something like this that persists for
several days you REALLY should go to see a doctor.
Early this year I came down with a cold and sore throat. The
cold subsided but the sore throat persisted for a couple of
months, occasionally shifting in location. Incidentally, I
had been abstaining from meat during this period. On one
occasion, I broke down and ate some fried chicken. The sore
throat went away. I figured this might be because of the anti-
biotics chickens and other animals are treated with.
However, the sore throat returned. After reading-up on the
symptoms and ramifications, I decided it was time to see my
doctor for treatment. Prior to this, while staring in the
refrigerator one day, I noticed iron tablets I hadn't been
taking behind the other supplements and thought that iron
worked in hemoglobin production, which might help healing. I
didn't really expect it to work but it did. Within a day,
the sore throat was gone and hasn't returned. I was
obviously iron deficient without realizing it and my body's
defenses didn't have the tools to fight properly.
Don't know if this applies to you; just a thought.

Wrongo. Sore throat isn't a symptom of iron deficiency. Iron
deficiency does not affect your immune system. And even if
you *were* iron deficient, you would not replete your body's
iron stores with a single dose of OTC iron supplement. If
you sneeze and it starts to rain, do you blame yourself for
the change in the weather? Just curious.

I just came back from doing just that and i am strep
negative. Doctor told me I have an encrustation and should
just wait it out. I have no idea what an encrustation is.
Does anyone have any idea? this sounds like nonsense. I am
still in a great deal of pain.

It shouldn't be a surprise that a body, including it's
immune system, will operate under par without proper
nutrition. I was definitely anemic due to a chronic
condition and have continued to occasionally take a
supplement since. I can tell a definite improvement in
breathing afterward. In the case of my ex-sore throat, it
didn't go away for months and after taking an iron
supplement, it disappeared by the next morning, never to
return. Obviously not a scientific proof but sure makes
sense to me and it worked!
