View Full Version : Alpe d'Huez - who's there ?

Debe

Ok, so the TdF is rollin' , my girl and I got a new tent,
new sleeping-bag and our old bikes , heading off to France
next week.

Who of the rbr guys will be at Alpe d'Huez, camping the
night before the TT ? I thought this might be a chance to
meet face to face and chat while having a beer or some wine.

Our car is the red german Volkswagen Polo with HB-... on
the license-plate and the sand-brown Tatonka tent right
next to it.

Anybody else there ?!?!

Greetings debe

I'll be there. I'm staying with friends in Grenoble though.
I was able to invite myself into the party so I'll have a
good spot course side. I'll keep an eye out for you though.
How high up the mountain you going to camp?

Don't know yet, but if possible shortly before Huez, so
switchback number 10 or 11 (if I get to place my tent
anywhere ...)

Hope it is a small tent. And that you can sleep standing up.

There are 13km of road on the slopes of Alpe d'Huez.
Assuming that both sides of the road are open (which will
not likely be the case on some parts of the road), that
gives us 26,000 meters of spectating space. Phil Liggett is
predicting 1,000,000 spectators. That leaves us with 2.6 cm
(or about an inch) of barrier space per spectator. If only
a quarter million people show up, we each get 10 cm of
barrier space.

In some sections the crowd is more than one person deep. You
also get some spectators climbing up the sides of the hill
to get the view from above the riders. They can see the
riders as the approach from the lower slopes and then as a
they pass.

OK - assume there is room for people to line up four deep. That gives us
each about 10cm if a million people show up and 40 cm if a
quarter-million show up. My point: it's going to be a damn zoo.

BTW, has anyone heard more detail about crowd control? Will
we be alloweed to ride bikes up on Wed morning?

Thanks,
