No young rider GC competition leader awarded a white jersey since 1988?
View Full Version : No young rider GC competition leader awarded a white jersey since 1988?
I remember Raul Alcala wore the white jersey in the mid to
late '80s (one year between '86 to '88 or could it have
been '85? No, too early since his first Tour was 1986 with
7/11's first entry). I remember when there were 5 jerseys
in total (the same 3 as today plus white for young GC and
multi-faceted for "combine" points). When they threw out
the 2 (white and combine) they either kept the young rider
prize without the jersey or restored it shortly after it
was removed.
So, when will they award the jersey again? I know it means a
slightly longer and more confusing presentation each day but
I think many fans follow this prize and giving out a jersey
might clear up confusion for fans that want to follow it but
don't know how to track it. It also means that another
sponsor can be in the sport funding that prize and gaining a
bit of publicity.
So, why not? When we have these stretches of the same guy in
yellow the fans like to enjoy other competitions and the
young rider prize is probably the most interesting when
everyone is waiting for a guy like Lance or Indurain to
retire (assuming one or more of the young rider winners from
their string of wins will be fighting it out for yellow
after he retires).
Another useless jersey/competition. Good riddens. They
should eliminate all the other jersey competitions while
they're at it.

They removed the jersey in 1988 but retained the competition
and reintroduced the jersey a couple of years ago. I have a
feeling that the qualifying criteria have changed now and
again though - I think that all first-time riders used to
qualify at one stage.

You can find a history of the white jersey competition here:
http://www.angelfire.com/realm/cvccbikers/tour/eddy/white.htm
There is also information on other jersey competitions in
the links.
Disclaimer: Angelfire is a lot easier to deal with if you
have a pop-up killer.

What are you talking about? Cancellara is in "white" as the
best young
(U25) rider - Boonen had it earlier.

Sorry - you meant the Combine - silly competition IMO - bit
like the "intergiro" (not to mention hideous jersey)

The intergiro was an interesting idea in its original form,
but it's just an intermediate sprint point classification
now (and the Tour had one of those once as well, red jersey
briefly IIRC, as it is also in the Vuelta).

Good what? Never mind (since you apparently do not
have one).
