Just got a 7 spd HG70 cassette in the post today, all bolted
together no nasty rivets, in a box, with destructions as
well. Curiouser and curiouser, unless it is very old stock.
Has anyone bought a bolt together cassette recently?

Yes, two of them. Both 9-speed. I don't know what the deal
is; I got one riveted one by accident a while back - it
was a lightweight one - but all the others have been
bolted. Odd.

I got a 105 bolted together 9 speed one a few months ago, I also got a LX one which was rivetted, not anymore though.

Got a 7 speed HG70 a few months ago (maybe 6) from EBC.
Nicely bolted thankyou. I think I've missed a thread here -
should I expect new stock to be rivetted?

Yes the thread started ealier in the year, it seems that
some suppliers are selling genuine upper range Shimano
stuff, but not in proper packaging and riveted rather than
bolted, and it's not just that Shimano have stopped doing
the proper bolted stuff; so look out for supposed mail order
bargain kit (even though mine was the cheapest on the web) A
similar thing happens with model train sets, the locomotives
and coaches in the sets are generally moulded rather than
painted plastic and plastic rather than steel wheels to keep
costs down.

Wiggle claim all Shimano gear is genuine and not grey
imports. Has anyone recieved rivetted stuff from them?

Right. So we're saying here that Shimano are making two
versions of the same model of stuff and then retailers are
selling whichever version they've got without
differentiating at all between the two. Is that right? If so
it should be pretty easy for urc to build up a list of which
retailers are selling which stuff. I can say that (a few
months ago at least) Edinburgh Bike Co-op were selling the
proper stuff. And I have, this very day, ordered two
cassettes from Settle Cycles - so, in a while (!), I'll be
able to tell you what they're selling.

I got my 7 speed bolted from Settle, the one that was
riveted and in a poxy plastic bag was a HG70 12-21 8 speed
(Ribble I think)

The HG50 12-21 8 speed I got from settle last year and from
expedia a couple of years back were all bolted. The bolts
were the 2mm allen key ones, so may have looked like rivets
- is anybody making this mistake?
cheers, clive

Sorry, I didn't make it clear I was posting the registration
link for news.individual.net .
Also http://groups-beta.google.com/group/uk.rec.cycling is
quite a nice link, as it keeps track of what you've read,
people's replies, and other nice stuff.
