View Full Version : I'm blogging the Trials -- a fan's revenge

Trackceo

Greetings, all

You've head the story about the guy or gal who goes to their
first track meet and sez: "Geez, I can do better than THAT!"
And a couple years later is national-class.

Get ready for the journalistic equivalent.

After years of silent suffering under the groaners of Carol
Lewis and the dull, cliche-ridden coverage of American track
and field, I'm ready to challenge the system by covering a
meet via Wi-Fi enabled laptop and a Weblog. I'm going to
Sacramento.

My goals:

Get the news out FAST! I hope to post updates even in the
middle of races. The wire services will be snails by
comparison. (I won't replicate results sites, however.
I'll just give the highlights for the hard-core fans to
chew over.)

Go behind the scenes. I'm bringing my Nikon Coolpix 4300 and
plan to share some snapshots of the post-event interviews in
the media tent.

Go for the color. TV -- even live TV -- can only scratch the
surface at an event as big as this. And daily newspapers
(AKA day-behind souvenirs) don't have the space.

With credential badge hanging around my neck, I'll be
posting profusely to SignOnSanDiego.com -- the Web site of
The San Diego Union-Tribune at this address:

http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/olympics/weblog/

My first offering is up now -- talking about how the blog
will be a BALCO-free zone.

And also unlike TV, you get to talk back! The SignOn blog
offers a comment function. So instead of throwing popcorn at
the TV, you can throw flames at me! But watch your tongues.
I have IP-banning functionality, and Im not afraid to use
it. (So Malmo, behave!)

I fly into Sacto today and will be up and running tomorrow.
Strap your seat belts. This will be some ride.

Your coverage is going to be more interesting than your
post, right? Right?
