View Full Version : Will C'dale warranty dents?

I'd like to get some input on a possible warranty issue. I have a new in
box Caad 5 road frame with a Circle Cycle (so. cal local team) paint job. I
bought it 2 years ago, but only looked at it with out taking the cardboard
wrap around the tubes and stays. I bought the bike at Circle Cycle and
still have all papers and am the original owner. After my current alum bike
gave out I started getting the C'dale ready. I noticed 3 blems on it:

1. Paint run on bottom side of down tube that looked like
it was fixed by wiping it off with a finger.

2. Weld blob inside shifter cable stop that prevents a
ferrule from going
in.This can be fixed by careful dremel tool work or maybe a
file, but one slip and I can have more blems.

3. Dent on left hand side of chain stay. This not a large
dent, but is visible if you look there. A customer
service guy at C'dale thought I was talking about
where the stays transitions from round to flat. Maybe
it's tooling, but it's sure not for crank clearance or
anything like that. I did look at some current Caad
5's and they don't have that.

Circle Cycle has been bought by Performance. I've tried
another shop and the rep can't look at it because he's in
Conneticut. The shop guy called and talked to the rep and
said the issue is going to be that I sat on the frame for 2
years. The rep is willing to at least look at it when he
gets back, but the shop guy said he feels that the rep isn't
going to do anything. C'dale has a reputation for ****ty
customer service. Should I expect anything to happen? Is it
reasonable for one to expect a blem free frame? Any input
appreciated

thanks, Ernie

Ernie: In general, manufacturers warrant cosmetic issues for
one year, period. Could be tough trying to convince them
otherwise, particularly if you don't have help from the shop
you purchased it from. Even more of an issue since, in the
meantime, Cannondale has literally gone bankrupt and since
been resurrected. So, you can try, but keep in mind that it
sounds like none of these problems will cause functional
issues with the exception of the shift cable stop problem,
and my guess is that they'd be willing to take care of that
issue for you without issue *but* you might not want to have
the bike gone for that long, particularly since it's pretty
easy to fix locally.

There's your problem. You should have checked it carefully
the minute you got it home.

Personally, I'd think that a person who really wanted a
blemish free frame would have checked it out immediately to
see if it was blemish free!

As it is, the shifter boss sounds like an easy fix. If
you're the _least_ bit hesitant about your Dremel skill,
protect the frame with tape, etc. and do it carefully by
hand, perhaps using a jeweler's file or a drill bit turned
patiently by hand.

The paint on the bottom of the down tube sounds
inconspicuous enough, and the dent doesn't sound much worse.

When my wife got her brand new bike (a special deal - she
was working for a bike-related company) the people there
advised her to immediately throw it across the floor so
she'd stop worrying about the first scratch.

Sure, it was a joke - but a bike is a tool, not something to
be hung on the wall.

I'd say Ride It.
