I have entered with a group of 5 friends for this years event.

We haven't done it before so we are not very experienced in what to take with us. Food/tools etc.....

I was thinking @ least

2 tubes / repair kit / Multi tool / Pump
6 power type bars
4 sachets of either goo or gatorade type stuff

As for clothing,
Arm / Leg warmers. Normal gloves
Possibly rain jacket, or Wind vest depending on weather cond.

What am I missing ?

Are power bars the best to take and what brands are good.

maybe take some money & your mobile.

After last years 'rain all around the bay' in a day you may want some money to bail out when you get within train station distance (frankston/geelong)

Forgot the list both of those, cheers.

looks like you'e got it pretty covered.

If you can, the best way to prepare for an event like the ‘bay ride’ is to take a day out & do a ride maybe Melbourne to Mornington/Sorrento & back.

Would you do this distance within a few weeks of the event ? I would have though within 2 weeks it's probably not a good thing

Cheers.

I would not bother doing mel- sorrento - melb. I think it is over kill - as the chances are on the day you will be riding in biggish groups so the ride should be easier.

do at least 3 melb-morn-melb's - the last one 2 weeks before rtb

i've done the last 4 years, and was doing this years- but it's not looking good as i fractured 2 vertebrae in my back last week (car hit me whilst going for a ride). so i'm off my bike 6-8 weeks.

This is my first but I have a small problem. I'm away in Europe all September so will only have 3 weeks from when I get back til race day.

I'll have to, shed the 5kgs of cheese I've put on :p and get back into fitness. Given my less than ideal leadup, I was thinking of doing 90% of my training prior to leaving on my trip (yes I've already started), so that when I come back, I can do maybe 1 big ride and some smaller warm ups in the last 2 weeks. Is this a good plan? Any other ideas?

You have most of it sorted. Try some of the above on your training rides. You may get sick of eating power bars etc (sick of the sweet taste). If you have 2 water bottles, have one with water only and the other with sports drink (again you may get sick of the sweet taste).

Let's pretend I want to do the Bay in a Day, have done very little training, haven't done it before and don't live in Victoria.

What is a basic training schedule to prepare for one of these rides. How many kms, how often a week, what sort of terrain etc.

The 'Bay ride' is 210kms long. There's a 40min to 1 hr stop for the ferry @ the 92/100km mark.
Most do the ride clockwise from Melbourne, that means you'll get hills between Frankston & Dromana within 30kms . Also a slight rise from Queenscliffe to Leopold.
There are rest stops every 30kms.

Most of the ride is flat, but open to the bay or across open plains which means that wind can be a problem.

I've done the 'Bay ride' 5 times, all on MTB's running slick or semi slick tyres. I averaged 24-28kms/hr. You go faster in groups & there are a number of bunches along the route to can tag onto or be part of.

From what I've seen, if you're in good condition & have been able to ride your bike 4 hrs at a time without major probs than you should make it OK.

Just don't peak coming out of Frankston up Olivers Hill.
