Step 1 - Leather Lounge suite
View Full Version : Step 1 - Leather Lounge suite
Q. What the hell does that have to do with cycling?
A. I have an agreement with my wife that once we buy a leather lounge
suite I can get a new bike. Tax return came in today with what appears
to be enough for both. WooHoo! And there was I about to replace some
more bits on my old piece of junk. Ahh decisions decisions. I suspect
there is going to be a lot of time spent in bike shops ove rthe next few
weeks.
One question though, is there a particular time of year where the
previous year's models get sold off cheap or does it vary by brand?

Yes... NOW! :-)
Well, the '05 model bikes (from the larger companies at least) will be
available very soon.

Yep. 05 Giants are being lauded about at the mo, so basically you can buy the same/similar but with different paint/colours (04) for less...
gotta budget?
correction. what will you be left with post-lounge-suit?

Negotiations to begin tonight. Originally thought $1000, may be able to
stretch to $1500 ( I can hear the scoffing from here from those whose
budget exceeds what I could spend on a car, but that will take me well
and truly out of the dark ages). Was thinking something like OCR3 and if
I can get a cheap 04 model could afford carbon forks. At least I have
the pedals already.

Just come back from buying some bits/spares from SHM (bourke St near Russell cnr)
They are about to move to QV and having a 30% off everything sale!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have have quite a few nice bikes in the 1000-1500 range.
An all black schwinn with black 105 (17 more gears than hippy's 'vegemite' :D )
A Felt F60 with carbon forks and seatstays
and many others
The sale ends this week tho (moving)
If you are thinking roqad and tri use you may want to look at either a short headtube or adjustable stem so you can lower the bars for the tri stuff.
Hippy might know more about this stuff tho as he does both...
(couldnt take my eye off that luverly ORBEA tho. $2300. mmmmmmmmmmm orbea)
Oh, what a lovely dilemna
Dont know about down there, but Hadley's in Newcastle NSW has OCR3's for
$750, but only in large sizes (58-62 i think).
Happy shopping

Dave,

I don't know about the frames but the components look to be good quality.
With the budget you've got set you will can get youself a higher spec bike
for roughly the same $. If you can stretch it

Hmm the 7700 looks the go, but how can you tell what size. I was
thinking of going into the Melbourne factory. Has anyone been there?
Were they much help in fitting? I can see the value in the LBS if I only
spend $200 more but get a bike that fits nicely.

Going on memory of you-versus me but Im betting that the Medium 52-54cm frame is the one for you. just to confuse things bikes with sloping toptubes can throw all measurements ou of whack to compare
this might give you some idea. nothing will beat throwing you leg over one and getting some prof advice tho...

Well if you're riding around on your couch you might want some music to
accompany you.

DaveB,
Give Learsport a try, worth the visit to the showroom, as sometimes you can get additional discount on an already competitive web price. I got an excellent deal on their XTR3270 D a couple of months ago, ($400 off), just because I was there buying my wife a bike for her birthday. Finish is excellent, and as you say, componentry across the range is as good as you get at the LBS (because it is the same).
You will be offered first free service, but most can usually do weekly maintenance so this is not an issue if you live across the other side of town. They also usually have a range of frame sizes to test ride.
Suggest if you decide to go, give them a ring or e-mail their sales dept, and they will arrange to have things organised for you when you get there. That was the service offered here in Sydney when I started the process for a new up-market / top-end commuter.
Good luck with the search for that new ride!

Marco Pantani used to ride in denim style knicks for a while. I always
thought they looked cool compared to the normal black nicks. They had
pockets printed on too so you could barely tell that they were lycra.

Heading down there on the weekend hopefully. The specs for their road
bikes all say Flightdeck-ready STI for the shifters. What does the
Flightdeck-ready bit relate to? Also, is there anything "funny" about
setting up these levers, because the first thing I will probably do when
I get the bike (ok, first thing after a test ride) would be to replace
the bars with the home-grown bullhorn bars I currently use. But don't
want to attempt that and then find I'm in the **** because they connect
to the bars in a weird way that I don't understand. There's something to
be said for having an old crap bike, you don't mind attempting new
things and don't mind if you stuff it up.

Flightdeck is Shimano's computer sytem:
http://www.branfordbike.com/computer/comp6.html
Flightdeck-ready levers are just their STI levers with little buttons under
the rubber that allow you to control the Flightdeck computer without taking
your hands off the levers. Nice idea except you need the $200(?) computer
to use them. I prefer my Polar.
>Also, is there anything "funny" about setting up these levers
Not really. Just an allen bolt under the rubber to loosen them and they slide off like normal brake levers (cept with an extra cable to move).
What's wrong with normal drop bars?
EDIT:
Check this out for lever removal info:
