how long do chains usually last? i have about 1800-1900 miles on my chain and have been pretty good at maintaining it. I have a big race next weekend, and it isn't giving any problems, should i just stick with it?

Don't you know how to measure one for wear? They usually don't break and go TU unexpetedly,but wear out slowly and will trash the casette if it gets too worn.

The easiest way is to buy a chain checker tool, otherwise use a one foot ruler and measure from a spot on one link rivet to an identical spot on a link 1 foot down the line. If there is more than 12 and 1/16 inches between those two links, it it time to replace. In other words, your chain which was once 12 inches from link to link has now stretched by 1/16 inch or more and is putting undo stress on both the chain and the gear teeth.

Most bike shops sell a chain wear measuring tool that is very simple to use.
