Is war the ultimate sport?

View Full Version : Is war the ultimate sport?

I had an interesting discussion with a roomate who happens to be a coach last night. He says that war is the ultimate sport. His arguement is based on the fact that there is a competition between two opposing forces of which only one will be declared the victor.

I for one disagree. The olympics were once our fellow olympians answer to war. For 2000 years our fellow olympians laid down their arms to compete in these games because they knew that there was more honor in outrunning a man than in killing him. Competition. Not conquest. To say that war is a sport is to say that killing men, women, and children is sportsmanlike.

I'm just curious if anyone out there agrees with me... Anyone care to give their two cents about the matter?

I don't know about it being the ultimate sport, however, the stakes are certianly much higher. Personally, I think calling war a sport is kind of crass but hey, that's just me.

I agree, it is crass. Here is my opinion.

Definition of a Sport:

an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition

A war is not a diversion, although it involves physical exertion and competition. Sports are refered to as fun activities, in no way should a war be approached in a casual manner.

Calling war sport does sound rather crass.

How 'bout the ultimate team competition? That I could agree with.

I think some people take sports way too seriously. Or war not seriously enough. Maybe both.

What's this have to do with cycling?

Has US Postal declared war on T-Mobile?
