Aero bars.

There is nothing stopping one from placing aero bars on a road bike, so..no sorry try again ;)

That's my point. Works for me, anyway. Though the bikesportmichigan article you reference is probably the better answer, I've done triathlons where you had to climb and corner, and let's face it, there is even some pack riding, so I like a road bike with aero bars.

Great artical Jitteringjr, thanks. I am an avid mt.biker and am in the market for a road bike. I will riding mostly by myself as I live in a rural area, and may do a little time trialing. I think a tri bike may be the way I am going to go.:)

I like the road bike w/ aero bars because I can't afford 2 bikes, but if I were going to have two bikes, it would be a road bike and a MTB not a Tri bike and a road bike.

Good luck. One thing I noticed while test riding Tri bikes is that they seem very hard to control while up in the forward facing handlebars. I think its because you are further away from the head set so subtle changes move the wheel more. Its something to be aware of until you get used to them.

should you later decide you like road riding, and want to do some road racing, tri/tt bikes are not allowed in road races/mass start events.
