Id still back Neiwand or Hill any day of the week.

Why would you back Hill or Neiwand ?

They won one world sprint champ each and for most of the rest of the time were not even medalists.

I think Bayley's record is the best of any sprinter currently riding and the best of any Auzzie that I can remember.

Oh and I am a big Neiwand fan which is why I included him in the original list, I just offering an unbiased view.

I had the good fortune to see the great Jeff Sherrens ride. He won 7 world professional sprint champion titles.

Bit before the 80s. but stiil must be in the running as one of the greats.

I think that he was mntioned earlier in this thread.

But as you see, most of the riders mentioned are from the modern era.

Please use the above poll to vote for who you think is the best track sprinter since the 80's to the present, i hope this gets a lively debate going

not on the list, should have been, one of the most powerful track sprinters at sea level

world record 200 10.459 (seal level)
world record 500 27.451 (sea level)
world record kilo 1.04.147 at (sea level)

much better rider than Neiwand, and tactically one of the smartest toughest opponents to ride against...

not too clever off track...like a large group of elite sports people, and thus did not endear to sports administrators who had their "favourites"...

Still reckon he was one of Australia's top 5 all time sprinters and certainly a world top 10 all time.

I think Theo Bos has the best record of any rider today. He has no Olympic Golds due to huge nerves, poor scheduling, and bad tactical choices, that cost him winning multiple golds in Athens that he should have won; however he has 4 World titles now, and is the only one in history to win atleast 1 in each of the 3 individual events. Bayley has 2 Olympic Golds but only 1 World title I believe.
Theo has great records at World Cups and Europeans and is only getting better.

Lutz Hesslich would have to be my choice for best sprinter, very fast and a fantastic tactician, his win in the 1988 Olympics summed it up for me, he just outclasssed everyone else. I would find it very difficult to choose others but it would be a close call between Hubner, Fiedler and Niewand.
records from us,uk,aus and world can be found here:

fred magne deserves some credit for the way he turned the fortunes of the french team around aswell as being a retired super-sprinter so i gave him my vote

a number of the uk's track leagues are home to some of the uk's super sprinters from the past - steve cronshaw, lee povey, rik notley, dave legro and many many more

Wasn't there another EastGerman around in the late 80's early 90's called Bill Huck who beat Micheal Hubner for the world title in the early 90's sometime???
I remember seeing Hubner at an invitational track ride at Herne Hill around that time and he was huge!

After Worlds you would have to say that Hoy is well up there with most of the greats. Beijing should confirm this.

Nakano all the way...

I even came 3rd in a Nakano Koichi Memorial Race in Japan about 4 years ago(Cat 5 then) and he was the starter.
I see him there every year as well.

He doesn't get the publicity he deserves.

Can't forgive him for what happened in 1982 against Gordon Singleton.

10 World Titles in a row is a great achievement but the Amateur Sprinters were faster in those days.
