Jim, sit on your bike, put a heel on a pedal, rotate the cranks so this
pedal is at its extreme distance from the saddle, your leg should just be
straight now, no kink in the knee and no hip swivelling to keep the heel in
contact. This is a good starting point.

I don't have clipless pedals, just cycling shoes with pedals and toestraps.
I like to be able to move my feet backwards and forwards on the pedal,
rather than have my foot stuck in one position.

However, in the last few months I have developed a tendency to move my feet
back, so that instead of the pedal being centred on the ball of my foot
(with the axel level with the broadest part of my foot) the top of the pedal
(the front) is just about level with the end of my foot. It feels more
comfortable to ride like this on hills especially.

Does this mean I need ot adjust my saddle - or have my legs changed shape!?
Silly question, sorry.

Thanks

Jim
