4/5 day route over Easter ?

Since 2001, over 90,000 cyclist's have joined Cycling Forums to discuss topics from general cycling to equipment, training, racing and travel or vacation destinations (especially in europe during the tour de france). We also feature an great deals in our online store, 100's of articles, classifieds and product reviews.

OK so we are quite new to touring, and are looking for a 4 to 5 day route,
preferably on cycle paths over Easter. We will need B+B over night and
nothing too difficult. We are from N.wales, but travel not important. Looked
at the coast to coast route from Sunderland. Anyone done it ? and
help/advice greatly appreciated....or is there something better out their ?

C2C ride to Sunderland is easily completed in four to five days. I did it
in three days and had only just returned to cycling after a 25 year lapse.
It is a lovely route. Not all of it is on cycle paths though. The roads
used are not busy.

You will find a log of my journey their under the name Vernon Lacy - must
get it corrected sometime.

You'll also find the log of Martin Newstead who posts to this group as
MSeries.

ALternatively there is the Trans Pennine Trail

Have a look at the Sustrans website for maps and guidebooks for the above.

Your daily mileage will depend on your touristy instincts amongst other
things.

I got a great deal of fun planning the journey and packing and repacking the
panniers. I will be more ruthless in excising surplus gear this year and
will still have stuff that remeains unused/unworn by the end of a tour.

C2C is a great ride but if you are new to touring why not have a go first at
the Trans Pennine Cycleway from Southport to Hornsea - granted it's a bit
longer but it's a bit easier (and availability of more accommodation gives
you more flexibility)

Other than the bit from Hadfield to Penistone there are no serious hills and
the roads for the most part are pretty quiet - we did it in 4 easy days
leaving Southport and stopping overnight at Stockport, Wombwell (Barnsley)
and Howden before finishing at Hornsea and riding back to Hull to get the
train home.

There's a good set of maps and guide book available as a package from the
Sustrans online shop

to east.

Its well signposted and quite popular so b&B maybe issue over Easter.

Lots of good advice. I've done it twice and enjoyed it greatly.....

Recommend that you get someone to carry your luggage.

We did it in three days 4/5 would be fine (last day very flat and fast)

You might also consider going a little further afield.

You could do a significant chunk of the Loire or all the Mosel Valley in 3
to 4 days (allowing a day for travel). I did a three day loop between
Nuremberg and Regensburg this spring -- easy but nice -- the Funf Flusse
route (5 rivers)

I did the Reivers Route and C2C combined with the CTC and carried
everything in one small rucksack. One of the other newbie to touring
members started with four panniers, a bar bag and rack pack. He was
persuaded to leave the two front panniers at the start and repack but
eventually it ended up with all his luggage spread out between the rest
of the party.

Whooaaaa!!!

Now that's what I call excessive baggage. Did he have a back pack too?

I'll admit to using four panniers but a pair of them is taken up with
camping/cooking gear which makes me wonder what i use the other two were
used for especially since I used to cope with packing all my gear into half
a carrier bag when going to france on a motor bike to maximise the duty free
capacity for the return journey.

Is it mostly off road? If you deliberately avoid the sections more
suited to MTB (Rookhope incline and the bit in the Lakes) then I reckon
it is mostly on road. Mostly nice quiet roads but still roads.

It depends how light you travel, but it's certainly an option on the
C2C. Even if you don't get your luggage carried it is worth using one of
the services (we used Breaks on Bikes, not sure if Michelle is still in
business) to get you and you bikes back to the start.

We did it over five days, very leisurely with lots of stops for sights
and visits.
