Another runner has finally seen the light! :) For years, as I pass runners while riding, I would smile and say, "Saving up for a bike?" Get out of your Nikes and put on your bike shoes. Your knees will thank you.
With respect to weight training, at 59 any weight training is good. Localized training could create an imbalance. In fact, biking does just that (i.e. quads vs. hamstrings, triceps vs. biceps). Work it all progressively. Core strength is important, as it is in all sports. Thanks bikerbill for the encouragement. :) I finally saved up enough for a bike. It is a lot cheaper than MRIs on your knees:mad:

I am a 53 yr old systems analyst. I have been riding bikes for 30 yrs off and on.
One of my goals, is to do a century. Which maybe this is the yr. I did 83 miles once and it about killed me. :-0
I would like to get more active now and with all my kids out of the house, it could be a possibility.

I am from Michigan. I am a student and I also work at bike shop. I am going to race on my college's team come spring.
what school are you going to race for? do you race road or mtb? I raced for KU for 4 years, doing mostly the moutain bike nationals (collegiate), and one of the road nationals. i have to say, that if your school does go to these collegiate races (nationals) i highly recommend you doing them. They are a really good way to get experience and to race really good people. Usually the top 5 or so racers are pro or going pro. And, you meet people from all over the country- there are some good parties afterwards.

I am from Singapore. Not a lot of places for road biking and drivers here are not very courteous to bikers but makes more sense that MTB. Ride 4 times a week, morning or evening. Teach spinning once a week and when the wind blows, I am out windsurfing. Maybe they should have a duatholon that involves riding and windsurfing cause I suck at swimming and running.:D

Where are you from, what do you do?
Hello,
I live in Blackburn Hamlet near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and I am riding a semi-recumbent Evox LE with 24 speeds, all alloy frame and components, high pressure tires, saddlebags & fenders. My arms were always tired and sore on a diamond frame bike but the semi-recumbent is a perfect solution. I sit up staight and I have a back support. I ride 16 km to work and then 16 km home during the nice weather. Now that winter and snow approaches, I only ride when the roads are dry and the wind is calm. I also have a "winter bike" that I will use as a beater for the harsher months but I will not commute. I am a mainframe programmer and a database administrator.

Sore arms? Sounds as though your position on the diamond-frame bike was a bit too far forward, which would throw too much of your body weight onto your arms.
Next time you get that bike out, try moving the saddle back, in tiny increments - no more than 2mm at a time - and adjust its height if necessary - again in tiny steps.
It may take you weeks to get this right, and eventually may force you to buy a new handlebar stem, but what the hell, it's only money!
When I was a kid the advice was "start with the nose of the saddle about 3" behind the bottom bracket (measured vertically) and adjust from there". It worked for me, but we've gone metric since then, and they've shot most of the horses.
All the best,
John Knees,

Hello! My name is Imogen, I am 19 and I come from Cambridge in the UK. I love cycling, I cycle 20 miles a day in the winter, and 30 in the summer. I think I am addicted.
I am moving to Melbourne, Australia in February and am looking to work as a bicycle courier. This has always been my idea of an ideal job but unfortunately there are no bicycle couriers in Cambridge as it is too small.
If anyone has any information about employment opportunities in Melbourne I would be very grateful.
Also, I have never used a forum before and I don't know how to start a thread! If anyone could help?
Thankyou
Imi

I'm from Eau Claire, Wisconsin in the USA. Winter is rearing its ugly head here so I'll spend a lot of time on the cross bike or rollers. Australia sounds pretty good right now and will sound even better by February.

That is a feat commuting all year round in Olympia. They do have a lot of bicyle friendly roads there and Olympia is very nice town.

have you ever thought about cross country skiing? i mean, you must have snow on the ground for most of the winter up there- its great training for road and moutain bike racing.
