Nashbar 11-28 9 Speed Cassette
View Full Version : Nashbar 11-28 9 Speed Cassette
Has anyone here tried the Nashbar 11-28 9 Speed Cassette? Is it any good? Can you list what cogs sizes there are on it and what its weight is?
Seems like a good cassette range for top speed as well as climbing! I know this range will work on an Ultegra 6500 SS derailleur.

well, i know this is not exactly the answer for what you are asking, but i've been riding on a 12-28 cassete, and i'm very pleased with the results. no more knee pain and a lot easier to tackle hills.
derailleur is a short cage ultegra, flawless shifting, 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-28. cogs 12-21 came from a 9 speed shimano 105 cassete, cogs 24-28 from a 9 speed shimano deore cassete (yes, mtb stuff).
of course, this was a bit expensive, 2 cassetes worth to build one, plus some tools to do the swapping. but there is a flexibility gain, thanks to the cogs spared. for example you could set it up as a 12-13-15-17-19-21-23-25-28 cassete and climb even easier.
i can't spin a 11 properly so i kept the 12 untouched.

Basically it is probably a 11-28 8 speed with a 13T as the 9th cog.
How they shift? I Dunno. Never used a generic Nashbar cassette.

LOL.....yeah no kidding.:D
I was bored so I gave it a shot.:o
but yeah, calling them is the only way to a get a real answer.

Thanks for calling. But did they have a weight for it? And was it just a mtn bike cassette or does it work for road bikes? Does it also use the Shimano Cassette Lockring tool?
Well, I emailed Nashbar to get the answers for these questions, but I forgot about the tool question.
Has anyone gone out and bought the cassette now? I might buy the cassette once I know its weight. If its less than 260 grams I'm happy.

I'm sure it doesn't have a fancy carrier like a ultegra 6500 does, but the price is good and the cogs are nicely spaced IMO. That 15T to 13T might be a little rough, but not bad for a wide range cassette.
Should be fine with a road bike.
Let us know how it works out. I might try a Nasbar cassette next.

Does a heavier cassette accelerate wear on the freehub?
BTW, the Nashbar 11-28 weighs 332 grams compared to an ultegra 9 11-23 which is 190 grams.
LOL...I called them. 11,12,13,15,17,19,21,24,28Did you happen to ask them who made it? I'd be curious to know that. I'm pretty sure Nashbar doesn't stamp them out in the back room or something.

Well, I emailed Nashbar Technical Support at technical@nashbar.com and this was their reply -
This is a mountain bike cassette. The gearing is 11-2-4-6-8-21-4-28. It weighs 359g.
I doubt the weight they give since that catalog says 347g generically.
So the question is now will a mtn bike cassette work on a road bike cassette wheel? So I guess now the only good wide range road cassette is the Shimano 12 - 27 Dura Ace - something I already have.

That's an 8 speed. You are missing a cog (should be 9 right?)

So I guess now the only good wide range road cassette is the Shimano 12 - 27 Dura Ace - something I already have.People use mtb cassettes on road bikes all the time. Current shimano road RD will typically handle a 30 big cog,and sometimes more. Chain needs to be long enough to handle the big/big.A 1mm spacer may be required on the hub body before the cassette if using a compact cassette with a 11 small cog.
That's an 8 speed. You are missing a cog (should be 9 right?) Yeah, looks to me like they may have just quoted the specs for the 11-28 version of the NS-CST8 8-speed cassette instead of the 9-speed. (they list 347g in one spot, 364g on the more info page page for the NS-CST8. The 359g would make some sense if you figure the published wts. as the 12-21 and 12-28 versions)
