What other reason? To have it before Shimano! Something had to be done after 80 years of Bowden cables.

30 years ago when rusty cables were a problem, this might have made sense but the electronics didn't exist, at least in a package tolerable. But the use of stainless cables, sealed housings with polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, AKA Teflon(tm)) and synthetic lubrication has addressed the root cause.

i know Niko Eeckhout used it for flanders.... not sure how it went as he only made half distance.. nothing to do with the electric shifters apparetnly as was gunning for gent-w... so wanted to be fresh...

More carbon? Aside from the extra bling points, the only advantages I can see are multiple shifters on TT/Tri bikes, the self trimming front derailleur, and quicker bar changes.

Campy's not the first. Mavic ran the ZAP (or ZAAP, I can't recall), back in the early to mid 90's. It had a friction Front derailleur, but the rear was electronic. It didn't last...
