Does anyone have experience pro or con with the record 10 bb, the newer one with the carbon shell?

i have read reports of early failure and bothersome noise.

i know this can result from inaccurate bb shell prep, but i am interested in use factors only.

reports have mentioned small bearings leading to failure, and/or carbon sleeve debonding from alloy.

if failure is common with this one i may decide to go the way of a chorus
(more durable due to no carbon sleeve?)

or a phil...

thanks!Given the issues with the CF shell, I'd go with chorus.the record is nothing more than saving a few grams.

I have the carbon one. I took it out after about a thousand miles and must say the carbon looks to be pretty beat up. The BB itself is fine, but when I replace it eventually (which may be years from now), I'll probably go with a Chorus.

I did have noise with the carbon BB... I now have a Chorus with no issues, as I cracked the shell on the Record when I over tightened it (to try and get rid of the creaking). Doh! I agree with the other posters, you gain almost nothing with record (and maybe lose something), better to save a couple of bucks and use Chorus for the BB.

Good thing you didn't crack the frame...:eek:

The notion of carbon does seem kind of silly. How much weight does it really save you, and I have heard (Boudreaux can tell me if this is BS) that carbon doesn't react well to grease. My shell might have gotten a little grease on it since I greased the threads before installation which may be why it lost some of it's luster. Also, I think the set screw that holds the cable guide may have scraped it a bit too. It rides fine with no noise, but next time it comes out I'll swap it for a Chorus.

I've had one for three years. Aside from a bit of creaking when I first assembled the group (solved by progressive tightening of the crank arms), it has never been the slightest problem.

Three years later, it's butter smooth and whisper quiet. No complaints.

I second that. I've had a record carbon shell bb in my old bike for about 5 years (9spd. version). I currently have another record carbon bb in my new bike with over 2000 miles in 9 months. I have not had a problem with noise or separation on either one, both are still smooth as can be. My older bb did get some corrosion on the threads due to water sitting in the bb which slightly damaged the threads, but no issues with noise or anything else. I do use grease on the threads in my old steel frame, but I run Ti prep on the threads with the new Ti frame.

FWIW my bad experience could be because I installed it, and since I had an Aluminum frame, the creaking could have been not from the BB, and of course the fact that I over tightened it and cracked it is my fault as well. Totally operator error... nothing wrong with the parts. If you BB is still good, don't worry about it.

What is the consensus on phil wood bb's?

I noticed Branford claims they go 20,000 miles no maintenance.

Totally operator error... nothing wrong with the parts. If you BB is still good, don't worry about it.
How did you manage to overtighten the BB? I use medium adjustable wrench on the BB tool and choke up a little on the end. I don't use a torque wrench at all. You must have applied some serious load to crack your BB shell.

Nah I am just as strong as I am stupid, that's all. :p I took the damn thing apart like 4 times cleaned everything, greased the threads and still got a creaking, frustration took its toll I think.

ahh! I've been there myself - Lessons learned through many mistakes. Any chance of a warranty replacement? I think any reasonable shop might be able to get it replaced for you at no charge! Nothing to lose trying.

This past winter I put together a new bike with Campy10 speed. I did all the research on Campy BB's. Roadbikereview.com is where I read more than a few problems with the Campy BB. IMO the only way to go for a Campy compatable 10 speed BB is..........Phil Wood.
That's the route I took. They're bomb proof. I spoke with PW and they informed me they have customers that have 20,000 miles plus on their BB's and still run like new. You can also send them back to the factory to have them rebuilt (new bearings) for $20.00.
In the long run,they'll pay for themselves when compared to other BB's.

I have a first year(1997) Record 9spd CARBON shell BB , with about 11K (maybe a little more) thats been problem-free. I've ridden it in the rain probably 300 , or so miles. The only thing is every 4-5K miles, I have to remove the BB to apply more Teflon Tape to the threads of the shell.....since its really starts to break down.

Overall, I recommend it. Also, I've ridden the older 1995-6 Record Triple sealed bearing BB....... which I have in another bike.......... and those are SUPER Bomb-proof......... you should be able to go on Ebay, and find either a English or Italian BB ..... slightly used, maybe new...... for right about $30 !
