Is My Shifter Irreversibly Damaged?

View Full Version : Is My Shifter Irreversibly Damaged?

This has been a really bad day and I'll explain why:
I had first successfully changed my gear cable and threaded it from the shifter to the front derailier e.t.c. but had been having more trouble with the brake cable. Basically, I couldn't get the cable out and I'll explain how I tried to do this to check I was doing it properly.
I loosened the allen key where the rear brake cable attached to the brake mechanism and pulshed the cable back through the sleeve. I then gripped open the brake and tried to push the cable some more through the sleeve so it would hopefully emerge through the hole in the shifter mechanism. However, the cable wouldn't budge. It had seized up somehow within the sleeve itself.
The main trouble happened when I got some help from my neighbour who knows something about bikes and he tried to grip the button of the cable within the mechanism with a tiny pair of pliars to pull the cable out a bit. I didn't think this was such a good idea as I was worried about the mechanism getting damaged.
That's now what seems to have happened. Somehow the guy caught some tape that forms part of the shifter mechanism and loosened it. What you can now see is some of this tape quite visible and partially pulled out within the shifter.
I have a sinking feeling that when I take my bike to a shop, the mechanics will probably conclude the shifter has been damaged and it may well be the case I have to purchase another one.
Does anyone know what this tape is exactly? It's like white coloured and has industrial writing on it. It's not normally visible within the shifter mechanism but my friend, while trying to help, yanked part of it out. Plus, there is a tiny tear.
I didn't blame the guy who was helping me as I appreciate he was only trying to help but I sure hope someone can inform whether this is as serious a problem as I suspect. :(

The cable is for the gear sensor used in conjunction with a Shimano FlightDeck computer. If you're not using one, it doesn't really matter.

Thanks. You're right. I thought I had shot my bolt but called in the shop today and the mechanic said not to worry.
The cable, however, was absolutely jammed in the casing so I had to change the casing to get the whole thing out. I now managed to fit a new cable and get the rear break working fine. I thoroughly greased the cable and casing and will also have to retape my handlebars.
