I thinking many of you know about newegg.com when it comes to ordering
computer parts, but is there a comparable bicycle online seller?
If I want to buy some cheap tires for kids bikes I can go to Wal Mart or a
place like that, but, as you may know, they don’t have all of the sizes.
So where is the best place to buy bicycle parts from online?
Thanks all,

Well I have bought several times from www.bikepartsusa.com and haven't
been too disappointed in the price or service.

My favorites:
www.cambriabike.com
(Great service, good prices, fast shipping, HUGE inventory)
www.pricepoint.com
(Orders ship same day. Will match any advertised price.)
www.jensonusa.com
(Orders ship same day. Will match any advertised price.)
www.nashbar.com
(You can always find 10%-20% off coupons online, fast shipping, 100%
satisfaction guaranteed - slow but excellent return policy)
Other very good stores:
www.universalcycles.com
(website stock status not always correct, call if critical)
www.coloradocyclist.com
(can be expensive on some items)
www.bikeman.com
(great selection, located in Maine - slow shipping to west coast)
www.performancebike.com
(I buy stuff here when I can find a 20% off coupon
www.supergo.com
(I had two orders lost by SuperGo, but they corrected it quickly)
**Side note: Supergo, Nashbar and Performance bike are owned by the same
people.

Another place to try is Lickton's.

Check each store's return policy carefully. In particular, Price Point
is horrible. I ordered a 12-28 cassette, but they shipped me a 12-30
one instead. Even though it was their fault - and they admitted it - to
return it, I had to pay return shipping for the wrong part, and pay for
them to ship the correct one. I won't shop there again.
For mountain stuff I find Cambria and Jenson the best; for roadie stuff
I use Colorado and Excel Sports.
Performance I only use if I don't need the gear until next year - their
shipping department is so slow, components are obsolete by the time
they arrive.

Never had a problem with Pricepoint return policy. They have been very
easy to deal with in my experience.

Dear S.,
I've never had a problem with slow shipping from
Performance.
Like most companies, they do tell you if something is out of
stock and when it's expected.
If you join the Performance buyer's club ($20 per year), you
get 10% off everything in the form of points to apply to
your purchase, plus 2-business-day shipping for the normal
shipping rate.
http://www.performancebike.com/team_p.cfm
So $200 worth of bike stuff in a year pays for the
membership and you get it with 2-day shipping at no extra
cost.
There are also members-only sales whose prices I'd like to
tell you about, but . . .

In my experience the PB 2 day shipping takes about 5 days, on average. And
they get about 10% of my orders wrong.

I am finding more local bike shops coming in with prices that are now
more competitive with the mail order sources than in the past, not
neccessarily on all items but many items. In additon if you build that
relationship they are there for you when you need service if they know
you. When you add the cost of shipping, and possible return hassles
and additional shipping it doesnt take long for the prices to come
pretty close to the big mail order outlets.
When buying a complete build kit for a Gunnar, Andy at
Yellowsersey@.org gave me the best price of all of the sources that I
contacted including Licktons (who wouldnt even consider selling any
line lower than Centaur). In addition Andy's advice was invaluable in
specing the bike. While Yellow Jersey isnt my local bike shop and I
technically did purchase over the phone and through the mail, at least
they are a local shop for those in Madison.

I will agree with you there "Andy" is a wealth of information, it is a
toss up to between him and Sheldon as to who knows more!
Ken
I am from the NE so I would vote for Sheldon.

Thanks!
Well, I'm from NE too, but I would vote for Andy. Especially for late
'70s and early '80s stuff, 'cause I was out of the bike biz during that
era (doing camera repair instead) so that's a bit of a gap in my knowledge.
However, since I don't have the troubles of actually owning a shop, I've
got more time to write stuff up, and I do make better photos than Andy does.

This is thanks to Shimano's recent attempt at price fixing. It seems to be
working.

If you need service, then using your LBS is usually the best way to go.

Well personally I have found that LBS is good for the instant fix, or
if for some reason you can't find the answer to a question on the net.
The one LBS in my neck of the woods has gotten some of my bicycle
spending money, but then again so hasn't bikepartsusa and nashbar. I
guess I just like to spread it around!

Dear Lee,
Hmmm . . . Our experiences differ. My orders have all been
correct and have arrived on time from the east coast to
Colorado.
It's unlikely that the following situations apply to you,
but they're worth mentioning whenever mail-order complaints
arise.
One cause of shipping delay complaints is ordering after 5pm
on Friday and expecting a 2-business-day delivery to arrive
Sunday morning.
Another reason for shipping delay complaints is ordering
items that are backordered, not in stock, and described as
such on the mail-order site--until they arrive, they can't
be shipped.
