Prayer overdose?

View Full Version : Prayer overdose?

An eight year old autistic boy died Friday while a faith-healing group
encircled him, placed their hands on him, and prayed to "drive out the
spirits" they believe possessed him.

Sad that.

So what's your point about this?
Are you saying that prayer is a bad thing? Or just that these people are
bad?
There are millions of people attending prayer services every week, confident
secure 'safe' people.
hardly any of them are doing exorcisms on 'handicapped people' In fact a lot
of them help the community and do their thing to making the world a better
place. To them their faith is a 'community thing' and to boot they hope for
a reward as the afterlife.
Why not post this on a religious ng and see the response?
It has little relevance in this ng, unless you are using it as a stick to
beat people with?

This is both 'alternative' medicine and 'alternative' religion. Few
religious people of any faith now adhere to such archaic superstition. It
is the same kind of fundamentalism that sees murder as a route to paradise.

Well, he's no longer posessedd by any spirit at all, so I guess
it's a cure.

1st I don't tout prayer as alternative, and imo prayer has an objective
effect.
I could post Gonzalzez/Kelley on the sci.med or whatever and get flamed, I
doubt anyong would have the balls to stand up on that ng.
I'm sure Dr Gonzalez would.

Rubbish and you know it, it was a carefully crafted post attacking the
people who have religious beliefs and nothing more.

It is, I see 70 year old grannies with their shopping baskets loaded with
TNT, doing regular suicide bombings every saturday.

I have no interest in attacking people who have religious beliefs. But I
have little patience with child abuse, and this would have been abuse of the
cruelest sort even if the child had not died. Do you know any autistic
children? Most, if not all, of them dislike being touched, even by members
of their own families. A whole group of strangers, restraining an autistic
child and "laying on hands" to pray for him is nothing short of pure
terrorism. Why I would be frightened to be the center of such attention
myself. When you get the urge to pray for someone, by all means, do so, but
keep your hands to yourself unless you have explicit permission to touch.
And in the case of autistics, perhaps a little "distance healing" might be
in order.

I do know some autistic children - my sister who is 'handicapped' works with
them, and some of them love to be hugged.
I lost most of my interest in prayers when they 'failed' my mother, and yet
I am still told that my prayers were answered
in the fact that they didn't suffer as much as she could have - go figure!

It worked really well for that autistic child, didn't it? Yup, he'll never
suffer from anything now that he was smothered with prayers from true
believers. Do you know of any verifiable, objective, _Positive_ effects from
prayer?

Try it and see...otherwise, Yawn.

No, it was an article about how superstitious, self-righteous assholes killed a
child because they would rather believe in demon-possession and DENY REAL
DISEASES, like autism.

I wonder if the perp is going to get a similar "cure" for his crime.

It's been declared a homicide.

"wrapping" is one way of dealing with a person on a bad trip, but
even in the hippie free clinic days, it was always with somone
who was stone cold straight sitting by them, monitoring their
breathing.

And a dumb ass way of torturing someone. Only used by idiots.

It's actually quite effective, and calms them down, but labor
intensive. You have to have one person watchng the wrapped
person at all times.
