I was asking for recommendations for bikes under $1500, but do you think you get more bang for the buck increasing the budget to $2ooo, if so what bikes are really stunning jewels to check out? Tell me what to test ride and i'll ride it.

Currently you might be in luck if you're looking to spend up to $2000.

Some companies, such as Trek are starting to get rid of their '05 models to get ready for the '06 models. Thats why there is currently the Trek "Tour" sale at almost every bike shop that sells treks. You can get a Trek 5000 for about $1950, its a carbon bike with Ultegra/105. Decent bike if you want carbon.

Also, Giant just released an OCR Comp Limited (Carbon as well) which sells for about the same price.

Depends on what you're looking for in frame material. If you want steel you can find some really nice custom frames such as Gunnar. You can get a really nice set up with parts you choose for around $1900.

Lemond Versailles is a pretty good bike with a steel bottom end and carbon top end (talking about the frame).

Honestly, there are a ton of options at that price. Just take bikes out for test rides until you find something you feel comfortable with.

Why not go to your LBS's and do some shopping and test riding? I'm not looking to buy, but still enjoy shopping. Yesterday was at two LBS, looked at some nice C'dales, Bianchi's, Treks and Orbeas, most priced around $2K to $2500. Lots of nice bikes to choose in this price range.

I live in manhattan, i have a hundred local bike stores and can find any bike there is in a bike shop. I've been mountain biking competitely for 10 years and am only now getting the road bug. If someone asked me for mtb recommendations i would have a ton of advice aside from just saying go to your lbs. I'm looking for experienced road bikers to give me suggestions about road bikes and i will check them out. I dont need someone to merely tell me to go to my lbs, that's not helpful advice for me.

I took a short test ride of the Cannondale 2500...and I thought it was a pretty nice ride too. It's retail at around $2500 2 or 3 weeks ago. Price may be dropping soon though

Going from $1,500 to $2,000 gets you from 105 to Ultegra as well as an upgrade in the quality of frames. You might even be able to get Ksyrium Elite wheels. I find that bikes in the sub $1,500 range usually use lower end accessories and wheels, adding weight.

I agree. Without question you can easily get full ultegra in this price range, and nice wheels too. While certainly not "unique", the C-dale R1000 offers great bang for the buck in this price range I think. Ultegra 10, CAAD8 frame, carbon fork, AND Mavic Ksyrium Elite, all stock. Some will say the CAAD frames are stiff and not comfy. I say ride one before you knock it. I have a CAAD7 frame and have no complaints at all about comfort (155lbs.). Grab the seat stays with one hand and it only takes a gentle squeeze to see obvious give.

In a couple months you could easily get the overstock 2005 R1000's for about 1500 or so. They retail for just under 2000 usually.

If you want a beautiful handbuilt frame check out GVHBikes.com. They are dealers for Viner as well as many other makes. Viner is an Italian framebuilder known for making some sweet bikes, but they are not very well known. You can score A Viner competetion with full Ultegra 10 for 1,870 + shipping.
