We're off to Hampton Roads tomorrow. We'll pull in sometime Wednesday afternoon. I'm bringing my bike and will look to get in some miles from the Denbigh area. Might do the Colonial Parkway to Williamsburg then down toward Ft Eustis area via Carters Grove road. Or vice/versa.
We lived in the area for pretty close to 11 years, so I know the riding routes very well. Hell, I bought 5-6 bikes from Contes down on Warwick; they used to give me a big discount on everything I purchased there.
We've been out of the area for the past 7 years now. It should be interesting to ride there in the next week.
We stopped by the Cookie Ladie's (June Curry) house on the way in. She really does live on the middle of a steep hill!!!! We will eventually ride to her home on our way across the U.S. on the TransAm trail...maybe beginning in May next year.
We got 43 miles out of our ride. We started in Newport News around Shields st/trail and headed for Industrial then over to Warwick (hwy 60). We rolled past Ft. Eutis toward Williamsburg. Before reaching Busch Gardens we turned in to Carter's Grove.. It was closed and been closed for the past three years. We went over the fence. The road was inrough shape, but rideable. After several miles went made it to Colonial Williamsburg where we rode right down Glouster St.
We stopped at the Green Leaf for lunch. There was a bike shop next door, so I took that opportunity to purchase some gloves. I had lost my left glove somwhere between Illinois and Virginia. The gloves were 25% off so that was a good thing!
Then we were off again. Down the Colonial Parkway toward Yorktown. It was a bit rough at first but smoothed out pretty good after around two miles. It was a pleseant 13 miles. Traffic was mdedium but polite.
After reaching Yorktown we rode the last 7.5 miles back toward Shields Rd and our completion point.
It was a great ride!
