Hi to all.

Been reading here a lot, and got the itch to get an Raleigh bike. Hard to find one to rework, I've noticed.

I did find a huffy sportsman Sturmey-Archer AW-64-1. Dunlop lightweight steel rims, blah, blah.

I took it completely apart. Those nice little bearings in the head found their freedom after forty years and ran away. No matter, 5/32 bearings replace them fine.

To make a long story short, everything, and I mean everything on the 64 Huffy Sportsman is English. Of course its stamped with made in England, Genuine English lightweight. John bull brake pads, the whole nine yards. The bell is marked, made in West Germany, and I haven't found out about the headlight as yet. The seat is a Wright, made in England. The calipers are stamped made in England, and on and on.

Anyway, tore it apart and put it back together. Everything cleaned up great, and its a fine riding bike.

I guess that I'm miffed at what others have said about these bikes. They seem to be shunned as something less than a regular Raleigh made bike.

The only thing on this bike that isn't Raleigh, is the Huffy sticker and front plate.

Take it from me, if you can find one,get it. Its totally British, and totally Raleigh, all of it. If anyone would like to see a pic of it, let me know and I'll e-mail it. Don't know how else to do it.

I just bought one of these at an antiques sale for $30, and I'm pretty excited so far. Only problem is that the chainguard is missing. Someone probably took it off trying to make the bike more sporty. It definitely wasn't to replace the chain, since it's pretty rusty. Overall it's just dirty, and needs the usual things. Cables, tires/tubes, polish, and a seat. The seat looks perfect, but the padding is gone completely. According to the coaster brake 3 spd it's a late 62 or early 63 (10/62 dated TCW Sturmey) This thing is pretty loaded. Generator light set, frame matching rear rack with a spring clasp. Front caliper brake with John Bull shoes, the whole bit.

I'm thinking a brooks saddle, a good cleaning, and some of those repro whitewalls that have been out lately. Good luck with yours, they're cool and functional bikes!

Try asking on old roads, those guys have the sickness worse than we do:D

I just got through with the cleanup, and it really turned out nice. I ran into a snag with the Sturmey, it will not hold a gear to save it's, or my, life, lol. I have already located a working hub/wheel annd it should be road ready in a week or so. What do you think?

Miguello, have you tried to adjust the cable. I had the same problem.

They are very touchy, I played with the gearing and got it to work right.

Have you been to Sheldon Browns site? A lot of information on three speed hubs-Sturmey. Just goggle Sheldon Brown, and you'll see it.

He tells you how to adjust the gearing, and it worked for me.

I did mess with it for about an hour trying to get it adjusted, using his article. The AW on my wifes Collegiate only took a few minutes and worked fine. I adjusted by quarter turns or less on the Huffy's TCW during the entire ride. It seemed to catch just fine, and the second you let off a tiny bit then reapplied force, the pedals went flying. I'm no sturmey expert, but it needs more care than I can give.

Okay, just thought I'd ask.

I think there are also some directiond for tearing the hub down too. Rebuilding it.

I agree that it would be easier to replace it though.

Miguello - What did you use to clean the handle bars? I just bought an old huffy 3 speed and the rubber on the handlebars is dirty.

I'm no sturmey expert, but it needs more care than I can give.The pawls are rounded. You can get new ones. I bet Sheldon has installation instructions too. I have actually bought one and held it in my hand; i.e. I am sure you can get them. However, for me, the experience just proved an AW pawl couldn't be kluged into an S3C pawl with any amount of filing on account of it's longer.
