Australian figures show similar trends to other countries. While the
overall incidence of cancer is continuing to gradually increase, probably
largely due increasing longevity, actual death rates from cancer are
decreasing, as are five year survival rates.

Over at least the last fifteen years, the death rates from cancer in
Australia have been running at somewhat less than half the rate of
occurrence of cancer, confirming experience elsewhere that the chances of
cure are about fifty per cent. when averaged over all kinds of cancer. It
