Here's a link that explains compatibility between tires and rims.

I use 26 X 1.5 Serpa Drifters that have done well for me. I used them to replace my original 26 X 1.95 tires.

I recently took off my 1.95 Specialized Hemisphere Armadillos since I ride my 15 year old steel hybrid almost exclusively on the road.
It was a choice between 1.5 Specialized Nimbus or the Serfas Drifters of the same size. I chose the Drifters because my bike is pretty old and worn and the LBS had the Serfas in stock whereas I would have had to order the Specialized on the Net.
I've noticed that the thinner tires are much faster and the ride is surprisingly good compared to my old soft commuter tires that are the Hemispheres. I was worried that the harder pressure and smoother tread would make the ride stiffer, but it hasn't.
The Serfas cost $25 each.
The Nimbus were about 35.00 plus shipping.

As long as the new tires are 26 diameter, you can "pretty much" put use any width (within reason)*
*reason meaning type of bike, size of bike, size and weight of rider, road surfaces ridden.....etc, etc...
