Upgrade Ideas for Trek

I currently have a Trek 1000 that I have been upgrading. Front fork, rims, saddle, seatpost, etc. I now want to know my best options for derailleurs. Currently, the rear and front are the stock Sora models. They are a good system, with some minor hiccups occasionally.

2 things:

What Shimano products will adapt directly, without any incidental modifications, to the triple crank, 8 speed system?

Is there any benefit to going to double crank, 9 speed? I don't find that I use the small chainring, even on steep climbs. This is an issue of cost vs. performance.

Realistic ideas please...

Dura-ace is very nice, but for a first upgrade I think you'll do very nicely with Ultegra rear and 105 front. Then, if you do an STI upgrade next go with Ultegra levers.

You'll notice that rear derailleurs come in a short cage and long cage version. If you still plan on using that small chainring then you'll need the long cage, but if you dump it (maybe you can remove it?) then you can go with the short cage.

I agree w/ MBL. IMO, I think the Ultegra or even 105 rear der. would be a nice upgrade from Sora. If in your budget, maybe a new crank also. But suggestions are endless............ :-)

MidBunchLurker has an excellent suggestion, all around 105 would also be great.
