2010 Olympic Games

View Full Version : 2010 Olympic Games

Vancouver was awarded the 2010 Winter Olympics. Chances of the 2012 Summer Games also in North
America? Slim and none.

If you want to go to the 2012 Olympics you'd better bring your Visa card and your fluency in
French because they don't take American Express and they blow smoke in your face if you aren't
fluent in French.

You mean like '76 Montreal / '80 Lake Placid, or '84 LA / '88 Calgary?

Arrive two weeks before the event, takes care of that problem.

Not two years apart, so soon after the mess in Atlanta and Salt Lake, and now the ethics revelations
in the USOC, and the problems with the NYC bid.

Think Paris.

All true, but irrelevant to NYC being awarded the Games shortly after Vancouver.

Why do you think these reasons are irrelevant? I had the discussion with the people in charge of the
SF Bid about this very topic (before the USOC chose NYC), and in the eyes of the IOC and the people
preparing the bids these issues are/were very relevant. In fact, they were among the major reasons
or obstacles to overcome for getting the USA Bid accepted.

Sorry. I worded that poorly. What I meant was that those reasons are true and relevant, but the time
proximity from Vancouver is not.

NBC has the US TV rights out to 2012. I doubt whether they'd want a repeat of the "docudrama" format
they had to do for Sydney. Athens will be OK, Beijing trickier. Don't underestimate the power of NBC
lobby in IOC to land a US TV-suited venue.

...that reminds me of something...

"Don't send CARE packages to Europe.

Can you afford to live in Europe? No. You can't even afford to VISIT Europe. And you know what they
do with your CARE packages? They whack them with their polo mallets, kick them into their swimming
pools and have a good laugh at your expense.

This has been a Public Dis-service Message from the National Lampoon Radio Network."

The last time I was in France, I was trying my French (from college many years ago). The
people I met were very understanding of my attempts and appreciative. While I do not care
for French politicians, I generally like the French.

I would not say it is impossible, but those times were very different. I think LA was the only city
to bid for the 1984 Games so it got them by default. Also with 2 years between Games, the proximity
in time is more of an issue. It does make it a bit tougher. I would say Toronto is out of the
mix. NY is in the mix for 2012 simply because of the US TV network money that might be available.
US TV money is the single biggest revenue stream for the IOC so there will be some desire to
keep them happy (happiness is live events to the US in prime time).

Please elaborate on the "problems with the NYC bid"?
