I found out yesterday that the Colorado State Patrol has recently unilaterally limited the size of organized rides in Colorado to 2500 riders.

More information can be found here:

Does anyone know if other states have similar limits? Off the top of my head, I think RAGBRAI has ~10000 riders. The CSP says this is due to safety concerns. How do other states ameliorate those concerns? How do we get the CSP to change their minds on this?

Thanks for any input!

You could get in touch with Cascade Cycling Club up here in Seattle (www.cascade.org (http://www.cascade.org)) They put on the 2nd largest orgainized ride- the Seattle to Portland Bicycle classic that has 8,000 registered riders every year. They may have ideas on how to work with the Colorado Patrol and pointers for organizing very large rides.
