Was Lance Miffed?
View Full Version : Was Lance Miffed?
Jeepers, he jumped off the bike. into the car and revved off without a word to anyone........
Possibly a little disappointed?
That seems to be his character more and more these days. I think he is flipping out. All of this
success (on the road and financially) is going to his head.

give me a break. he is competitive and human.
that being said, i do not think this course with all the cobbles was right for his style. i was
thinking this as he was going thru a corner early on (between the commercials), how the bike bounced
around while he was out of the saddle. he also may have been taking it too easy....notice how he
limped thru that last corner.
i remember an interview years ago (meuseuw maybe) that stated the need to push big gears over
cobbles for this very reason. hell, we all have experienced rough roads and know what it takes to
get thru. What is important to note here is that he made up 2 seconds over the latter half of the
course. we will see who is "miffed" in 8 days.

You're delusional. There were some cobbles, but really not much. The course wasn't technical at all.

The reason he made up 2 seconds on Millar in the second half was because of Millar's chain problem,
else he would have lost time there, too. A better comparison is McGee. He was 4 seconds down on
McGee at the halfway point, 7 seconds down at the finish.

Gee, do you think?
He hardly beat George. That's got to have him worried.

From CyclingNews:
"I'm a little bit disappointed by the way things went. I certainly wanted to win today since it was
the Centenary prologue. I started a bit slow and just couldn't get up to speed after that," said
the disappointed defending Maillot Jaune.

Read his book. He says he hates to lose worse than anything in the world. He's a hyper-competitive
Type A personality, for sure. I don't think he's much different than he's ever been.
Maybe it's just me but it looked like the roads were wet for the last 8 or so riders. Maybe they had
a little rain and that affected how aggressive he could be?

Stop looking for weird excuses. There was no rain.

need to take conclusions so soon? He ended 7th. What's wrong with that. He did what he had to do and
placed himself amongst his rivals in the top 10. He certainly doesn't have any advantage in taking
the yellow jersey in the prologue. Au contraire leading the overall ranking from the first stage
means that his team starts to waste powers too soon.
After the 2 prologues he won, did you say the same thing?
You may not care but I guarantee you that he does. He wants as many stage wins as possible and he
wants to be well placed for the TTT (which he still
important.

As a guy named Lemond can attest.

I remember last year Lance was not upset at all at losing the yellow (the TTT IIRC). How long did he
fight to keep it the other time he wore it from the start?

not very long - gc riders don't want to wear their teams out in the first week - let the sprinters'
teams control the race.
What is important is time relative to other riders that have a chance to win. Losing the MJ to a
sprinter that takes is from him based on time bonuses is the ideal outcome. That would leave him
placed highest of all GC hopefuls and yet he does not have to chase breaks. Another point is that he
does not mind losing to prologue specialists as long as he has the
psychological benefit of beating his main protagonists. Lance is counting outright career wins
overall, career stage wins and total career days in yellow.
The ideal scenario, win MJ and stage, give it up to a sprinter or other no hoper (gc wise) in the
next day or so. Second choice is to lose to prologue specialist. Third (come one, can't you see the
logic?), lose MJ, stage and time to main rival(s).
Losing to Tyler was not fun but losing time to Ulrich was not a good sign at all. We all know that
Lance thrives on pressure though, so maybe this is the best situation for him, regardless of hoe he
perceives it. In the 2000 race, Ullrich was expected to win the last TT since Lance had yet to win a
stage and the race was held near Ullrich's home town. Lance rose to the occasion and won his only
stage that year.
Lance may be worried, but his diehard fans should not be. Not yet.

No they are not. I know it's easy to reffer to LeMond, but let's face it, that was exceptionnal.
Almost every winner was able to make a clear gap with the second rider. These seconds of the
prologue really don't matter. Only if Lance isn't able to make difference (or shows that he has a
hard time following his direct rivals) in the first stage in the Alps, he and his fans may maybe
show signs of doubt and worries. But that's not gonna happen.
