Sight of the week?
View Full Version : Sight of the week?
While pedalling along the Upfield path this morning a fellow pedalled down one of the roads crossing the path... with his right leg in a cast... and his crutches strapped to the side of his bike.
Keen, or what???

Back in 2001 I incurred multiple foot fractures in a non-cycling accident. Hence it was easier to ride than walk. (weight bearing, ouch!) Copped quite a few second glances down the shops as I took the crutches off the top tube & hobbled around. :D

:) That makes sense - and avoids that pain from crutches rubbing under the arms...
The sight really had me grinning this morning. I would be hopeless if it was my right leg/foot - although it might make me learn to unclip my left foot for more than dire emergencies

I did this for 6 weeks in Canberra in 2002. Broke my left foot in 3 places
playing footy and had the doctor put on a fibreglass cast with a Goretex
lining. This meant I could shower without a plastic bag on my foot and
could get water flowing through to clean my leg and stop itchiness. I took
one of my SPDs off of my mtb and replaced it with a flat pedal, managed to
get one of my reef sandals over the cast (rather than the ugg boot looking
thing that the doctor gave me) and once I was riding, it wasn't too
different to riding normally (cast only came up to below my knee) with the
obvious exception of lack of foot movement. I had 1.5-inch, high pressure
slicks on the mtb and used to take great delight in overtaking guys on
roadies with my crutches strapped vertically to my backpack and saying
G'day.
The goretex liner was great as I could get to work (18 km each way trip) and
then have a shower and get in the pool for some laps (had to keep in shape
for footy). Once I got out of the water, the inside of the cast would dry
out pretty quickly and I never got any itchiness inside it. The only
problem that I had was with my toes getting cold on my morning commutes
(0600h start during the footy season in Canberra!!) but I overcame this by
managing to stretch an old army sock over my foot and then put a plastic bag
over it. I also managed to stretch a leg warmer over the cast to keep my
upper leg warm.
A lot of people commented that I was mad doing this but when it came time to
get the cast off, the Dr reckoned that it was the best looking leg that he
had seen come out of a cast, with very little muscle atrophy and no scaley
skin. It was the first time he had used a gortex liner and he indicated
that he would probably start to use them more often due to the results that
I had.
Did get a reality check one arvo though when I saw a guy in AIS gear riding
along Northbourne Ave at a pretty good pace and he only had one leg!!!!
Made my problem pretty lame (pun intended) by comparison.
Gags
I've seen a fellow on the St Georges Rd bikepath a few times - his left
leg has a number of rods through it, connected to braces - presumably
some sort of multiple fracture? He said he was riding to build up leg
strength. Looks pretty grisly, gotta admire his guts.

Guts yes - brains no. One little mistake and the guy is looking at more operations and more weeks or months of recovery. Sometimes you have to get the indoor trainer out at home and get driven around in a car the rest of the time.

This is my mate on a Melbourne CM ride. See that big black thing on his leg? It's not a CFM boot. That's what you get when you jump off one of those truck-towed toilet blocks... twice.
Very messy collection of fractures and here he is on the bike.
Dude, you rock! :D
