Hi, I don't usually post here, but this question isn't really right for
r.b.tech, so...

How do they determine the categories of the climbs in Le Tour? I know that the easiest are Cat 4 and
the hardest are Hors Categorie. But what determines how a hill gets rated?

IOW, how steep/long/high does a hill have to be to qualify as a cat 4? 3? 2? 1? Or Hors categorie?

TIA

May you have the wind at your back. And a really low gear for the hills! Chris

Chris: It's not just a matter of how steep/long/high it is, but also its placement in the course. A
nasty hill early in the day is generally classified lower than the same hill would be at the end of
the stage.

I thought the legend is that the original categories were with regard to how a car could cope with
the cols - 4th meant it could go up it in 4th gear, cat 2 in 2nd etc. "Hors" - (out of) category
meant a car couldn't make the pass.

Right for the old climbs, but the for the new it is it is a subjective determination, based on the
old climbs.
