suggestions for tires

I just picked up a new Trek 4500 last week. The first time I sent out on it everything was fine and I was really happy with the purchase... until the next morning when I notice I had a flat. Ran out and bought a new slime tube and had it ready to go again. I head out and on the way home, another flat?? Not to mention the slime flying all over the place! Anyone have and good suggestions for new tires?? I think the stockers are thin since I'm 0-2, this is getting old! I really want something that can be used on a trail but isn't too bad on roads when I trust it enought to ride to work. Thanks!

It could be a little shard of glass or something that's stuck in the tyre, popping each new tube you put on. When you get multiple flats in close succession, that's what it tends to be.

Did the flats happen in the same 'spot' on the tyre?

A good cheap MTB tyre that rolls well on tarmac and sealed surfaces is the Maxxis Larsen TT. It's pretty good off-road as well, but I'm not really a fan of the kind of grip it gives, especially when the trail is loose or a bit wet.

EDIT: ah, the bike's a week old. No chance of the tyres being at all worn down yet, even if you did double Lance's training schedule :p

I would say that you have something sharp in your tire. As for tires the Michelin Jet S is a tire that you could ride on the road and off. Hutchinson makes a Rock n' Road that Nashbar had on clearance for $8. If you are not looking to spend the bank.

After the first flat, I found a small thorn if the tire but thought there was no way it caused a fat. Once I saw the small hole it caused, that may have been it. Before I put the new tube in, I felt all inside the tire and there wasn't anything there. The second blow out was kinda funny.. I remember seeing the little thorn bush that I thought caused the damage so on the way back home. I figured I kick it off the trail. I saw it and just after I kicked it off, I heard something go flying that sounded like metal.. It must have been something pretty nasty, put about a 1/2 inch slice in the tire and trashed the slime tube. I went and bought a thicker thorn tube today but I'm wondering if I should replace the tire??

You could try a tube patch on the inside of the tyre as a repair, although how well that will work depends on how well the glue takes hold.

Certainly if you leave it like it is, you'll probably keep getting punctures...

It must have been something pretty nasty, put about a 1/2 inch slice in the tire and trashed the slime tube. \If there is any kind of slice in the tire, everytime you put a tube in it, it will squeeze out the slice. I would certainly buy a new tire for the bike. if you are looking for a tire that works well off road and on road, I would looking into a Michelin XC Hard Terrain, or maybe even their Country Trail or Country Gravel. All 3 of those tires would work well for what you want to use them for.

Continental Verticals... I am obsessed with these tyres and recommend them to everybody, and I havn't been beaten up yet for recommending a poor tyre.

if the tyre has a slice in it you can "boot it" using an old toothpaste tube chopped in half and opened out on the inside of the tyre between the tube and the tyre. this stops the tube popping out. would only recommend as a temporary fix though.
