hey guys, first of all im a new at this and dont know much about the mechanics of bicycles. On that note, i just pulled my moms raleigh out of the garage and want to get it going so i can ride to school. I started pedaling the bike and the rear gears will down the gears without any assistance and when i backpedal it will jam and lock up. Any advice?

You need to get a decent repair manual such as that written by Lennard Zinn. Since that is an older bike, you may take a look at your public library for an older maintenance manual.

Also look online at the Park Tool website. They have nice illustrated instructions for working on every part of the bicycle.
