Etxebarria's out?

Erik Van Leeuwe

I just heard that both Etxebarria's are out of the Tour because they finished too late. That is,
after adding the penalty time they were given because of stayering behind the team car. Sad day
after all for the Euskaltel team going into their mountains.

You heard wrong. They both finished the TT

They may have finished, but will they be starting tomorrow?

Both are out. They were penalized for drafting and the penalties put them past the time cut for the
stage and, thus, were eliminated. Brutal.

per cyclingnews.com :

"David Etxebarria (Euskaltel): Fined SFR 100 and penalised 2'05 for drafting for 5 km at an average
speed of 41 km/h. Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel): Fined SFR 100 and penalised 5'51 for drafting for 13
km at an average speed of 43 km/h.....

Riders David Etxebarria (Euskaltel) and Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel) were given times of 1:14:59 and
1:14:49 respectively after their penalties, and were eliminated from the race. (Elimination time:
1:13:12). "

But look how long they were drafting! They've got no excuses for that.

Oh definitely. 13K is just stupid. I meant brutal in that they only missed the time cut by about a
minute and a half....I didn't mean to say that the commissars should've bent the rules for laziness;
my goodness David was drafting to only go 41 kph! Mark

How about Glomser? was he penalized? On the TV he was shown drafting Botero for a loooong time...
probably 10 - 15 km!

Yes, he got the bighest penalty of the day, 6:43 for drafting 13 km at 44 km/h.

How do riders think they can get away with drafting on a car for 13 km? It is hardly subtle.

They both finished, but they were both HD, outside the time limit and hence eliminated. HD on a
mid-length ITT is unusual.

Not if you're packing a ten minute penalty apiece.

I personally though it a little harsh to eliminate them.

The penalty could have been applied to GC time and left the lads in the race.

I don't. They were drafting. That's a cardinal sin in a TT. The only possible reason for being
lenient is that they weren't GC contenders, but I don't think that you should have one rule
for riders who have ambitions in a stage and one rule for riders who are just trying to make
the time cut.

Yeah, but then every domestique might start leech drafting in TTs, and soon the whole stage would
degenerate into a circus except for the top five on GC.

Agreed Ryan. This is why Le Tour retains a shred of dignity and the other grand tours are somewhat
laughable. These two obviously thought they were in the Vuelta where a blind eye is often turned on
this type of behavior.

The Giro is also suspect of such silliness. Anyone remember the Giro organizers chopping off a
mountain stage just to help Moser win, IIR?

Spot on, again. Make the athletes fully earn their finish in Paris......

...or send them packing.

But in the Tour there was that time Lapize.....

Seriously, at least you could come up with an example in a year when most of the people on the
planet had actually been born.

Hmmmmmm. My bad. I guess I thought 1984 qualified as a recent Giro example. I know I was born before
that year. My guess is you made that cutoff too.

And FYI, Francesco Moser's still alive for cripes sakes. At least bother to google before you make
an **** of yourself.....

...or not, for the greater amusement of rbr.

g.

BTW, since you're still probably too lazy to google, the mountain stage was cut so a french guy,
Larry FigNewton, wouldn't beat the Italian Moser for GC.

Nor's drafting behind another rider - which is what UE was doing, IIRC. He wasn't expecting to get
away with it, he just wanted to save a bit of energy and hoped not to be penalised that much /
wasn't expecting Ullrich to be that brilliant.
