Last night while watching the Fox News channel I read a cholesterol-related
headline on the ticker. It said the following:

Study shows low-dose aspirin to be just as effective as statins.

None of the anchors mentioned this last night while telling the headlines.
Again, I only saw it on the ticker news bits.

Does anyone know of a link to a recent story about the above-mentioned study
that Fox News alluded to last night?

I heard the same study on the radio this morning. After much searching I
found this article:

Thanks for the link. I would want to see the study. Also, a key question is
what about in combination? They do different things - though with the same end
goal. It could be like saying seatbelt use found to be statistically superior
to well maintained breaks in preventing auto deaths. And much cheaper too. Or
maybe not - depending on the details of the study.

If there is such a story, it would be old news.

Aspirin plus statins in patients at risk would be better (more effective) than
either alone.

Humbly,

Andrew

Actually Dr. Chung, it didn't mention anything about "Aspirin plus statins".
It read, "low-dose aspirin found to be just as effective as statins".

Old news. Aspirin is effective at preventing heart attacks. Statins are also
similarly effective. These two things have been known for years now. They work
by different mechanisms so their effects are additive. No one would prescribe
one instead of another.

Humbly,

Andrew

I don't think that's exactly what the study itself said. It compares
the "cost"-effectiveness of aspirin and hbp medications vs statins for
those in various risk factor percentiles.

Brad Sheppard

Also, moderate drinking prevents CHD better than statins. " Indeed,
the evidence that alcohol reduces coronary artery disease and
mortality is better than the evidence for the statin drugs, the most
potent cholesterol-reducing medications"
