View Full Version : 7 Speed STI
Hi, my bike is in need of new shifters, it currently has shimano rsx shifters, a shimano EX FD and a sachs RD. My question is will shimano sora 7 speed shifters work with this setup with no problems or will I have to find another solution?
Thanks in advance.
Where I live, Sora is 8 speed. :)
I had this problem too when my RSX stuff wore out. The local shop couldn't source any replacement parts for it cos it's so old and any second hand parts are likely to be little better than what you have.
I ended up replacing the whole drivetrain - RD, cassette, chain, cranks, BB - and shifters with Campagnolo Mirage parts. It wasn't particularly expensive and I wanted to try out the Campag shifters cos I'd only used Shimano before. It might be a bit OTT if only your shifters are broken but unless you can find second hand RSX bits it could be worth considering.
Mirage is 9-speed but if you drop one sprocket and spacer out of the cassette it fits comfortably on a 7-speed freehub.
you're RSX are 7 speed? I always get them mixed up with RX100 :)
8 sp shimano shifters will work on a 7 speed cassette. I had 8sp Shimano 105 and 600 levers on 7 speed cassettes for years, between about '93 and '98, and they worked fine. I even had the 8sp levers working on 7sp Maillard screw-on clusters (free-wheel)! It just means you have an extra 'click' at the bottom of the down-shifting that does nothing.
