What was Ullrich muttering to himself?

View Full Version : What was Ullrich muttering to himself?

Uncharacteristically, he looked to be angrily talking to himself all the way up the climb. (The
cameras caught it several times, usually followed by a sidewise spit.) I've never seen that from
him; in 1998 he just looked depressed when he got dropped (is this a new, more combative Jan?).

Anything asked about this by German interviewers? Any German lipreaders out there? Just
curious.--Shayana Kadidal

"Where's my dealer when I need him?". "Does the Porsche Cayenne come with air bags?" "Ulrich by 1:19
over Armstrong in the final ITT!!"

If he's anything like me he is trying to talk his legs into going faster. Something like Come on
legs, only 4km, nearly there, faster faster, not going to lose this, push push etc etc etc......
thing is I'm like that on the flat!

I don't know what he was saying, but that scowl is familiar looking. Then it occurred to me that if
Jan cut his hair, he would look like Biff Tannen on the old "Back to the Future" movies.

Looked to me like he was singing the Horst Wessel Lied

For the ITT will finally decide it; For the test I am full ready. Soon will fly Bianchi flags over
every street; Yankee Rule will last only a short time longer

But maybe I'm wrong, perhaps it was The International

Hmmm, it looked to me as though it was the Horst Wessel Lied

Zum letzen Mal wird nun Appell geblasen Zum Kampfe steh'n wir alle schon bereit Bald flattern
Hitler-fahnen Uber allen Strassen Die Knechtschaft dauert nur mehr kurze Zeit

Translate: Now the ITT will finally decide it; For the test I am full ready. Soon will fly Bianchi
flags over every street; Yankee Rule can never last much longer.

But perhaps I'm wrong; maybe it was the International

Arise ye couriers from your slumbers Arise ye prisoners of want For reason in revolt now thunders
And ends the age of Lance. Away with all your superstitions Servile riders arise, arise We'll change
forthwith the old conditions And turn the cranks to win the prize.

Boo! Hiss!

That's just too low, I can't find anything funny in putting one of the Hitler Jugend "anthems" in
connection with anyone.
