Banish Liggett - Promote Kirsten
View Full Version : Banish Liggett - Promote Kirsten
Well with all the regular rec.bicycles.racing Know-It-Alls dissing Kirsten Gum, maybe it's time we
took the time to get rid that Useless mine of disinformation, Phil Liggett and promote Paul Sherwen
who at worst is better than Liggett and at best a superbly competent commentator.
Liggett's ignorance of Tour history is abysmal and his command of the English language is not
much better.
"Clavicule" - yes, right Phil
"Frederico Bahamontes" - never seen his name in print Phil?
"Ullrich had a flat tyre at the bottom of a climb" - which climb, Phil, and when.
Paul Sherwen on the other hand is knowledgeable, witty and totally devoid of the jarring abuses of
both Fact and the English Language that make Liggett such a poor candidate to commentate such an
important race as the Tour de France.

Even when he says that riders "literally exploded"?
Did you know that Kirsten Gum has never ridden a road bike in her life? Did you know that when she
was first asked about doing a bicycle race, she said where do they put the basket, when looking at
her first road bike?

Dunno **** 'bout **** baby.
But at least Kirsten might say something intelligent once a week

Hear hear. Why this guy is worshipped is beyond me. Bombast is far too good a word for his painful
commentary. I don't have TV and haven't heard Kristen, but anyone who asks where the basket goes is
all right in my book.

So WTF?
She might say something intelligent once a week which is more than most of the rest of the OLN
Team can do

Add "bilge" to "bombast".

That's "expl-O-ded".
Try commentating yourself. With all that empty air staring you in the face, consider what you would
come up with, not as easy as you think. Maybe you would prefer John Tesh?

I think its great that the OLN subsidise Phil and Paul's annual jolly so we can get coverage in the
UK. I know I would hate having an american commentator commentating on the Tour broadcasting over
here so I can see why it might annoy you!

Ah Yes, the noise from the Cheap Seats.
But I'd still trade 50 Ligetts for a character like Dave Duffield

And strangely there is huge anti-Duffield feeling amongst UK cyclists! I have to admit he does his
job well really, completely different to Phil/Paul but equally entertaining.

Duffield suffers from "Loony Fringe Brit Bicycle Nut Disease" even worse than Phil. I have no
interest hearing in the "Tour de Millar." On more than occasion, I've wondered about his sobriety.
Much better to slot in Sean Kelly.

A great commentator knows how to enhance the natural drama of an event without distorting it or
being overly intrusive themselves. OTH, Phil seems to think he needs to hype every event like he is
working for a supermarket tabloid. I'm not talking about his enthusiasm and colorful (albeit at
times screwy) language, which I like.
The problem is that Phil's powers of observation often lag way behind the speed of his mouth, which
can lead to inaccuracies, faulty analysis and ridiculous exaggeration. Phil's relentless hammering
of words like "amazing" render them meaningless. He sometimes loses all perspective, which is not
good in a commentator for a big a stage race, and that drives poor viewers like me crazy.
Phil also seems to be under the misapprehension that he is working for the Australian Broadcasting
Corporation. This leads at times to a cockeyed focus on British Commonwealth riders at the expense
of others. I could care less who won stage 4 of the Tour of Lankawi.
Finally, his obsessive fawning over and excessive excuse making for personal favorites like David
Millar and Marco Pantani is self indulgent and unprofessional.
Still and all, I suppose I will miss him when he retires, which I think will be fairly soon.

I think Phil and Paul are great.
Phil is obviously very emotional at certain points in the race, and this is related through the tone
of his voice. When I first got into bike racing and started racing the Tour, his enthusiasm for the
sport was pretty contagious. He seemed to add a bit of class and sophistication to an otherwise
pretty simple sport. Only later did I find out the truth ;-)
Paul is obviousy *very* knowledgable about the inner workings of the peloton and racing in
general... having spent close to 10 years as a pro in Europe. You can learn a lot listening to him.
I've also learned a lot of the "Queen's English" listening to P & P.
For example:
Its not "so and so was taken to the hospital" Its "so and so was taken to hospital"
Its not "so and so was on vacation" Its "so an so was on holiday"
I also like Bobke. But, I think the folks at OLN might get tired of him never seriously answering
those email questions. It sounds like he makes something funny up, intending to be more candid after
the punch line. But then after the punchline, he just forgets about telling the more honest answer
to the question.
I like them all, but if I had to pick just one to do the commentating, it would be Paul.

Phil makes ALOT of mistakes, mostly minor, and probably due to having to ad lib live. But he knows
alot too. Paul knows alot, but his excessive use of superlatives diminishes the use of them. How can
everything be "UnbeLIEVable?"

An image from Monty Python comes to mind...
Mark Janeba, who really enjoys Phil & Paul
