Just saw an interview with Jan and he said that if the yellow jersey is within reach, "anything goes
on the final stage"!!!

This should be fantastic

Fantastic indeed. But for anyone nostalgic for the old days, we may not be seeing anything
of this...

I agree with you but even if Jan gets a big lead on Lance after the "TTT", I'd still like to see the
final stage battled out to the end and not some bozze swiggin pansy ride.

So you think one guy would try to stay away from the entire USPS team chasing him? Let him fry for
an hour or so and then counter him when he's caught.

yeah, let's keep things realistic. If there isnt a real strange accident on sunday, the peleton will arrive in a pack at the finish. Besides the yellow jersey, a green one also has to be fought out (and if we're lucky, it will stay close till sunday).

This basically account for todays (wednesday) stage as well. Probably a long and succesfull escape. And probably non-threathening for the top 5 (10?). If the escape has a dangerous rider in their group, there will be at least 4 teams that will chase them down in the final 80 km if this stage (so they could easily chase down an escapegroup of >15min if they needed to).
If this type of thing happens, we can also have a mass-sprint in the final, for the green jersey.

[BTW THE TT OF SAT IS A ITT NOT A TTT] ;-)

Not just chasing him. Sitting on his wheel.

Everyone knows that Ullrich can't accelerate. I don't see how he'd even get a gap unless there was
an uncharacteristic crosswind. The last stage is short and flat.

Ilan Vardi

Eddy Merckx attacked Bernard Thevenet from the gun on the last stage of the 1975 Tour de France. It
was the first time the Tour finished on the Champs Elysees (previously on various velodromes), but
as Thevenet recalls every year on his TV commentary, he didn't get to enjoy any of it. Oh, and there
wasn't the usual procession to the Champs Elysees either, since the whole stage was on the circuit.

Anyway, that was Merckx, and the rider most similar to him these days would seem to be Armstrong,
not Ullrich.

He said if after the ITT were within a few seconds that it would be legitamate for either himself or
LA to attack the other.

Wrong, Upper Case boy.

It's an ITT. OBVIOUSLY there is no TTT on Stage 19. Not possible.

Ullrich 'can't accelerate' because he tends to use big gears and pedal slowly - with the strength it
takes to turn over those sort of gears up a mountain, he'd probably be able to accelerate quite
sharply if he changed down a few gears and spun for a bit. However he's still not going to be able
to break away, because near the bonus sprints and finish the sprinters' teams will be going for
points (green jersey probably still up for grabs), and anywhere else he'll get pulled back by USPS
(six very good TTT riders against even one superb individual is still no contest).

Possibly more interesting: if Armstrong is a few seconds down after the TT, or for that matter wants
more cushion before the TT - with the team he's got, if he had USPS in its entirety on the front of
the peloton, going along at a decent speed, with Heras, Beltran, Rubiera in the last three wheels,
and the other six went for a simultaneous attack off the front and into TTT mode, would they be able
to hold off the peloton chasing? Ullrich probably wouldn't be able to get across if all six were
going flat out to avoid it, because he would be in a big gear, and it would take him some time to
change down and get going.

Now you're just talking crazy. I take the Bears bus (with Ditka driving).

The insurmountable problem would be getting a decent gap in the first place. LANCE would need Zulle
to knock down Ullrich on a slippery causeway for such an occurance. So no, it won't/can't happen.
Neither is going to let the other go. It only takes 5 seconds of anerobia to close down a little
gap. Then you just sit on it till it dies.

Gap: three bike lengths of Heras, Beltran, Rubiera not moving off the front, plus Ullrich will not
accelerate very quickly from whatever gear he uses to ride along in the peloton on the flat (so he
will have to change down, which will take a moment more). Then he has to get out from the middle of
the peloton - he can't go through the three climbers USPS leaves behind, which will take a little
bit more time: Ullrich won't be in the air drag of the six off the front - and the point of 'going
flat out' is you are going anaerobic (or at least whoever's on the front for USPS would be). That is
sufficient to stop Ullrich on his own having a chance of catching up, because he might outlast one
USPS rider going anaerobic at the front, but he will not outlast the second one.

It will then take a few seconds to get a chase going, and a few more seconds to get enough strong
riders in it to start bringing back USPS rouleurs, and if that happens less than 5km from the
finish, then USPS will cross first, Lance leading and hence taking 20secs bonus plus miniscule
extra time.
