Cable Rub on New Bike--Warranty Issue??

View Full Version : Cable Rub on New Bike--Warranty Issue??

I purchased a new 2006 Tarmac Comp, and LBS put one of the decals on the cable rub area in the wrong spot or they did not move the decal to the correct location. Now there is a inch spot or red paint missing on the bike in the cable rub area. I've had the bike less than a month, ridden it less than 5 times, and spent time cleaning it after every ride. Its pretty annoying since I did not cause this. Is this something Specialized should fix or the LBS. Im pretty sure it falls under the warranty from specialized. Any thoughts on this issue?

What kind of decal did the LBS put on? What do you mean by wrong spot?Bike should come from Specialized with all the decals properly affixed and they usually aren't in the areas where cable rub would occur.

This would not be a specialized warranty issue, not many bikes come from the manufacturer fully assembled. The LBS would need to build it up, a lot of bikes from low to high end don't come with any protective patches to stop cable rub, its mostly up to the owner to put these on. The LBS might have put something on as an extra, so you might not be able to blame them placing it wrong.

Before any actual cable rub appears, the right spot is simply an educated guess.

Is there any damage to the frame or is it just the paint? If it's just the paint, now you know where to place a new protector patch.

Maybe it was all that cleaning.
Put a felt patch over it and go ride.

5 rides in a month does not equal cable rub, impossible.

Yes, I lied, it was 5 rides and a lot of around the block rides. Sorry!

Can you take off the decals on your bike, and do five rides and let me know if there is cable rub. If there isnt, I will accept being called a lier.

Not calling you a liar mate. I do over 200 miles a week and don't have any decals nor do I have cable rub on my paint. Think about it for a second.... the friction required to affect your paint would have to be pretty constant and long term.

Either contact your dealer or specialized directly. It could be that your frame got a bad paint job. My guess is that Specialized will make good under their warranty. One month is too quick to call it normal wear and tear. After a year or more it would be a different story.

I added a pic of the cable rub. Sorry folks, just annoyed everytime I watch the missing paint spot.

Huge paint job defect IMHO, no way should a cable do that after such a short time. Most cable rub occurs more forward of the head tube anyway, that appears to be towards the back at the weld joint. Back to the LBS is my suggestion. You have a legit beef.

Seems like im blowing it out of proportion. Thanks for all the help. Ill get some decals to cover it up.

Fire engine red is a pretty easy color to match, just go to a hobby shop and get some gloss arcrylic paint and touch it up with a tooth pick, do it in thin layers let it dry for at least 24hr and and then use some liquid auto polish (cut and polish) (must be liquid not paste) and lightly polish back the raised sections, then put on semi transperant patch and you won't even notice it.

Had good luck matching paint in the nail polish section of WaltMart. A plethora of colors and right cheap, too.

Maybe I'm just being difficult, but I think this is all very petty. If you're this annoyed at some cable rub, how bad is it going to be the first time you wipe out while taking a turn with loose sand on the pavement, or a rock bounces up and chips the paint on your downtube, or heaven forbid chainslap smacking paint off the chainstay? Chips and scrapes happen. Are you having fun riding, or are your priorities in making a (now) used bike look like it hasnt been used. Just my opinion.

vchu7105

thanks, that sounds like it would work perfect.
