Pedals?????
View Full Version : Pedals?????
Help me out here guys.......
I have been road cycling for about 3 months now and have left knee pain. I have adjusted the height of my seat and that seemed to help alot initially but now the pain will come on about halfway through my 25 mile ride and then will go away. I have shimano spd clipless pedals but those dont seem to allow alot of float. I am wondering what could be causing this pain ( my right knee doesnt bother me at all). COuld this isolated pain be caused from the pedal or do I need to look over and make afdjustments to the bike?
Also, what pedals are out there that allow the most float and what amount of float do I need to concentrate on. I know the speedplays allow unlimited float but was thinking of something not so expensive.
Any information is welcomed and I appreciate your time in replying to my questions.
Thanks
Tom
Years ago when I first took up the noble sport, only used sneakers and toe straps. Had lots of left knee pain (a relic of lots of running on bitumen footpaths, etc). When I bought Look Pedals, used Red Cleats (have about 5 degrees of float on rear of cleat- no float on front), knee pain vanished overnight :D :rolleyes:
then my mate gave me Black cleats cos he didn't like them;
I used them for 400 kms, loved the direct and tight "no-float" feel because it felt so secure;
BUT the left knee soreness came back...
my solution: I use Black "no-float" for right shoe, and Red on left.
Thousands and thousand of K's without any real knee pain at all...
funnily enough, got some dull throbbing knee pain once after walking from the train station after work, was planning to ride at velodrome that night,
thought "wonder if pain will worsen...oh, well, I will take a gamble..."
Went to velodrome and was very happy, pain evaporated...
But: Look Cleats wear out quickly.
Time Pedals and cleats have float on both front and rear, apparently they last for ages.......
ask some friends if they can let you borrow some pedals/cleats off their spare bikes, try them for a week, see how you go...try as many as you can, will save you buying something that may not suit your particular afflication...
best of luck dude
Thanks for the information:) !
