David Millar's Personality
View Full Version : David Millar's Personality
Sherwin and Liggett use euphemisms when they talk about David Millar ("a bit unpredictable, &c). But
sometimes he appears to be just plain strange.
What's his story?

He's 1) a professional bike racer and 2) he's from the UK.
That combination means that 1) Phil and Paul love him, 2) he's good at ITT and 3) he crashes a
lot in ITT.
That's pretty much the story with most of the professional cyclists from the UK recently.

And sometimes, he brags about his lack of preparation. Like after today's stage, he told Frankie
that this AM, he only warmed up for a couple of minutes before the race (in the rain yet) with this
silly grin on his face. And gosh, you know, he felt pretty tight the first 10k of the TT! This isn't
the first time I've heard him say, "well, you know, I really didn't train much for this one." I
think his talent is a blessing and a curse. And you're right, I think he's a loon, in the tradition
of classic "British" eccentrics who are more than just a bit odd.
When Phil read David's whiny plea for roping off the last 15k of the race because of the conditions
(and why did he send that to Phil? He's not a race official) the only thing that surprised me was
that David hadn't stopped one meter short of the finishing line and refused to cross to protest the
barbaric conditions.
David complains a lot about his Directeurs, but their are two sides to every story.

One story -- Last year's Vuelta, At the bottom of the Angliru he claimed a car ran him off the road
or something, and did some bike tossing too. Then he did the climb and abandoned before the finish
line in protest.

anticipation:

No, he didn't just 'claim' it. It actually happened - as in it's in the TV footage. He crashed at
the foot of the final climb after crashing on the descent of the previous climb (the weather was
appalling on the day). A team car then drove over him as he was lying on the ground (I can't
remember if it was the Cofidis car or not) but his bike was on top of him and this prevented serious
injury so he remounted and rode up the climb. He refused to cross the finish line as a protest
against the dangerous conditions (he had a point), and was therefore disqualified.
He said afterwards that he later realised that his actions could be construed as an act of petulance
and promptly apologised to his team.
Just setting the record straight.
Lets just face the fact boys and girl, Millar won todays stage because he had the biggest balls. Now
if he was American with a broken collar bone you'd all be loving him...
F.
Armstrong let him win. At least that's what Millar said in the interview after the race. Sometimes
whinging does pay (also being Lance's friend pays too.)
BTW, did anyone notice that Armstrong and Millar have the same TT helmet, one even the other Posties
don't have?

Armstrong had a different agenda, which is true of most other stage wins in the Tour. Lance just
wasn't taking any risks so that he could protect the jersey. He certainly didn't slow down to do his
pals David and Tyler a favour.

Dont forget that the OLN coverage is the same as the ITV (UK) coverage and this year he's the only
Brit in the race. So he gets interviewed everyday even when he suffering like a dog. If you know us
Brits you shouldnt take all of his comments at exactly face value. I only warmed up for a couple of
minutes could mean 25 minutes on the turbo & he is just trying to be relaxed about it. On the other
hand he is known not to apply himself as much as he could and that drives people crazy.

As did being Jaja's friend greatly assist in his 2002 stage win. Interesting that some of the top
riders rate Millar on both performance and character a lot higher than we do in here.

He is a powerful time trialer and he looked good climbing this year at Classique des Alpes. Not so
good in this TDF, but he wasn't well. FWIW, the guy has some of the best form on a bike of anyone in
the peloton. He'll continue to be a factor for years to come.

He complained about the ITT course being dangerous after he WON it so his complaints can be taken
more seriously since he did win.

The French TV coverage followed Millar very closely too. They also correctly sais he was a 'Scot'
and not English as they usually do. He came over pretty well on French TV and the commentators
thought he made a good effort.

Dumbass -
Someone who complains when they win is unquestionably a whiner.

At least this time he was complaining on someone else's behalf. I thought his comments were merely
pie-in-the-sky. This time.
