View Full Version : New Legends
IMHO this is the year that Lance and Jan really have made history. In earlier Tours there were
always questions about the level of competition and lack of adversity. This year almost everything
that could happen has. In the end Lance won the Tour based on his superior bike handling skills and
"refuse to lose" attitude. The respect for the race, each other, and tradition was incredible. We
are incredibly lucky to be able to watch TWO great champions of the sport ride together. As a big
Jan fan today's rain and crash killed me, but as soon as people started reporting the forecast I saw
it coming. I said it last night. The way the race ended was appropriate because it highlited Lance's
skills. Bravo to both! Bill C

Rode in a car (smart). Yeah, Jan might be faulted for not going out there to take a real look too,
but the problem was that he had to push for time (take risks) and Lance didn't, especially since the
problems were all in the last six or so miles-- IOW, get to the bad stretch even on time, or even
close, and Lance could back way off on the corners.
Looked like Jan got caught on a crown, and Lance was able to ride slower, more centered in the road
where it was flatter. --Tom Paterson

Lance didn't need his skills, he had a minute lead, and when he heard Ullrich had crashed he was
able to cruise (by his standards) the rest of the course.
Ullrich, because he was 65 seconds down had no choice but to go all out. The crash was almost
inevitable under the road conditions.

Agree, and I admired Ulrich's "go big or go home" strategy. That was the only thing he could do.
