Wheel replacement
View Full Version : Wheel replacement
I'm going to buy a new wheelset for my bike. My question is...will a current wheelset be compatable with a 7-speed cassette?

Maybe. Use a millimeter ruler to measure the space between your rear dropouts.
If it's 130mm all that you have to do is to grind the rivets off of the back of your cassette and stick in a 4.5mm spacer to make your cassette fit onto the 8-speed freehub body.
If it's 126mm You'll probably need a wheel that has a 7-speed freehub body. Assuming that you have a Shimano freehub body, if it was my bike, I'd just buy the wheel that I wanted and swap out my existing axle set and freehub body. You'll probably also have to sweeten the dish but that's not a big deal either.
I measured 134mm ? Does that sound right? I was kinda hoping to not have to modify anything that I buy...hoping it would be just an easy take off...bolt on swap. Hmmm...???
Sounds like a 26" wheel MTB.
I sometimes use a wheel with an 8 speed hub in a 7 speed Giant MTB (for sale below) with an 8 speed 11-32 HG-30 Cassette. I have adjusted the RD to shift the high 7 (11-28) of the 8.
The original wheel has a 7 speed Freewheel, a spin on.
So, when you buy the new 8 speed wheel, buy a new 8 speed cassette. :)
Ok...ok...ok...should of done this in the first place...
Currently this is what I have on my bike...
Shimano FH-MC12 Hub
Bontrager Maverick Rim (E.D. B 06 ... E.R.D. 542) Didn't know if that meant anything
7 Speed Cassette...quick release levers
Rim brakes (V-Brake)
Will this work?

With or without much problems???

It'll work easily but you'll still need a 4.5mm spacer to put behind your cassette.
Why would you want to use a 9 speed Disc Brake Wheelset on an entry level 7 speed V-brake bike?
Find something more appropriate. What is wrong with the original wheel?
Well...its the original Wheelset on a '96-'97 Bike. Ok...now...about a week ago I was riding...slight downhill (pavement) when I felt a 'ping'...followed by a few more...then a crunch...locked up the wheel...then it started spinning...then few more 'pings'...followed by a skid to a stop. Quite a ride coming from about 25 mph. Anywho...the outer 8 spokes broke on the gear side of the wheel. I don't do much "hard" riding on the bike...mainly used as my daily rider back and forth to work. I do routine check-ups on it...all the spokes were tight. To my best guess...looks like metal fatigue? Has anyone else had this happen??? Upon further inspection...looks like some others may be weak??? ...or just look weird due to little pressure on them??? Also...to me it looks as though the hub holes are slightly oblong. To have it relaced would cost about $50...I have no clue on how to do it myself. Also...getting a new wheel from my LBS would cost about $55 for very low end (no name) rear wheel only. I found this wheelset (bought other stuff from Greenfish) and it looked like a real good deal. Also...someday when I get a new bike (pending that these are better)...I can transfer them over...maybe. What else might you all suggest instead of this wheelset for the $100 mark?
Seems how it sounds like they would work...what else would I need to get besides a 4.5mm spacer?
Time for a new bike. If it is just for commuting, look at a Flat Bar Road, like the Giant FCR. Or, put the cheapest 7 speed rear (no name) wheel in it to keep you going.
See if they have a rear wheel like this in a 7 speed, but first make sure the old wheel is a Freehub (cassette) not a Freewheel (spin-on): http://www.greenfishsports.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=241
I would like to keep the bike running for a few years? I just love the bike. Would you think that no name products would last for a while? I'm just not sure if I trust them.
