The Thread about Nothing....

Since 2001, over 90,000 cyclist's have joined Cycling Forums to discuss topics from general cycling to equipment, training, racing and travel or vacation destinations (especially in europe during the tour de france). No rain bike (yet) but once I build up the very light steel frame that's sitting in the study even as I type, then the ally bike will become the wet weather bike.

I went to a couple of McDonalds in India. They have signs up saying that they don't sell any beef or beef products.
What a coincidence, they don't sell any here either...

I dunno why people don't like trainers... I do an hour a day minimum on mine in front of the telly. 10min W/U 10 min C/D and 40 minutes of intervals in between. I start getting bored after 2 hours but I don't do that too often.

I only get to ride in the evenings at the moment (2 jobs) :( but I reckon the trainer helped heaps fer the TT I just did.

ive always played sport in the rain...i love it..i mean obviously there is a serious safety factor in road cycling compared to tooty but hell if its your turn to take a truck up the ass then so be it...Errr,,,, what's tooty? I just hate riding on the indoor trainer. The time I will use it is if I go to a spin class, but that's pretty rare. I'd rather ride on the road. I only really bail if it is pissing down before I head out.

No rain bike either, except I will sometimes go for a splash round the bush tracks on the MTB instead of a road ride when it is really wet.

same here, i do trainer work outs all week and outdoors rides on the weekend ( excluding the work commute, but thats jsut a recovery ride)

as for the MTB on dirt, how deep are your pockets?? MTB + mud = constant repairs and breakages.

Yeah, the top of Pikes Peak was hard on the lungs, and that was just after driving up. And that road was an non-stop adrenalin rush being my second day ever driving on that side of the road.

can anyone give me advice on which would be the better option? can mountain biking add value to me from a road bike skill/technical aspect? i do want to get into racing road bikes seriously in 2007...

Of course mtb adds skills, and at the very least its a nice diversion from traffic, etc. Do it.
But also buy yourself a beater road bike. $1 or 200 can get you some incredible older road bikes on ebay. Old top of the line cromoly gigs with downtubies which you can still use your current 9 and 10 spd wheels on with friction, or chuck some brifters on cheap. Take the time to shop around, hell, buy two or three of the buggers and teach yourself about what you like in terms of geometry. Everyone needs a pub bike.

A number of Aussies have been banned from a rival Seppo forum "bikeforums' by a Xenophobic, dictator of a moderator who decided that not only could we not use the term 'seppo' to describe those from the continent of Nth America...but any thread we started, if she didn't like the topic,she just deleted...what a pain...anyway, looks like we've decided to migrate here...(where we probably shoulda been anyway)...I'm sure the lads will be across soon...registering takes time ya know.....anyway feel free to jump in & say g'day....in the thread about nothing....well sometimes it's about cycling...only sometimes , mind :Dwelcome then mates! g'day an' that!

Actually Saccy, I agree with you & was just thinking the same....she clearly loved her job & I'm assuming mods don't get paid...so it's a pity for her....just wish she hadda attempted to resolve things rather than just go 'bull in a china shop'.....I'm assuming she 'cracked it' & resigned, rather than be shoved?....expat?......So whose starting the "bring back Koffee thread"?.....anyone?....anyone?.........

In honour of the goings on of the last little while, I'd like to move a motion that August 1 be observed as "The International Give a Seppo a Break Day". Along with the Horses' Birthday celebrations that is. :D

Oh, and for our new players: seppo = american. Here's how it works:

Aussies are pretty lazy with the lingo by nature and tend to shorten everything into a single syllable or a rhyming word/phrase wherever possible. It mostly stems from the hard working blue collar workers of the 50's and 60's. So somewhere along the line americans were all refered to as Yanks. In all likelihood a visiting Yank probably got offended because they were from Missouri (not New York) so rhyming slang was used instead - septic tank rhymes with yank - kinda like a covert way of saying Yank without offending anyone. There's some irony in that, but it takes us an age to explain irony to a Yank so I'm not going to try. Anyway, did I mention that we're a lazy bunch? Well septic tank is three syllables and, quite frankly, rolls off the tongue like a brick. So it was shortened to seppo (more than likely so that some little Iti (that's an Italian migrant blue collar worker) could understand what was going on). In some contexts it is shortened even furtherer to just sep.

Hey 531, to carry on from some comments in the old TAT - my brother rang me to say he saw the Malmsteen gig advertised and wants to see how it compares to the Steve Vai gig of all those years ago. :eek: Looks like I'd better dig out the ear plugs & start growing my hair!!:DYeah, and spot if he's wearing a rug! :)

I nearly gave my Vai ticket to a guy I knew out the front of the Palace that night, coz I was only half-hearted, and he really wanted to see him....but I didn't. This is pretty obvious, but I thought the highlight was The Attitude Song with the 3 guitars. What happened to that young Aussie guitar player?

the last gunslinger I saw was Holdsworth at The Station Hotel, in Greville St., about 9 years ago. He just threw together a band of local guys. I reckon they make half that stuff up. :p He was amazing, but VERY boring to watch.

I saw Vinnie Moore at The Corner; he was pretty amazing, too. Every bit as good as Vai.

I saw a Frank Gamble clinic -- I was a bit disappointed. I mate of mine got to pick up his guitar after the show, and said the strings were virtually touching the frets.

I used to be a huge fan of Jim Hocking (The Astros, etc), and i went to the Musos Lounge every Monday night, just to watch him do 5 songs! I dunno how he got such a good sound out of a non-preamp Marshall and 2 Boss Overdrives!

Jack Jones blew me away as much as any of the guys above. He's a farking freak!! But now he cares too much about music to play like an 80s wanker -- he just does Hendriz licks, and hangs out with his hippy mates in Ackland St.

existence - SS MTB is the way to go, makes you tough as nails and hardly any maintenance.

G'day! How'd you score a flight in the Airvan? (I used to work for Gippy Aero in a previous life). Very jealous that you've been to Oshkosh, I moved back to Oz two years ago and have missed going to Oshkosh. It's a fantastic place for an aviation nut!

do you do that ride? I'm trying to give it up coz it's a bit late. They don't start the 'fangin' until about 7:30pmTruth be it, I'm only in year 11, Schools out at 2:00pm on tuesdays for me, so I'm home from mordi before the ride even begins:D

Worst thing about the boulevards is the crappy road surface - and bloody dark if you don't have decent lights (me!) The TT for the Herald sun Tour this year is on Kew Blvd. Perhaps they will re-surface it?:rolleyes:

Hawthorn velo gets good light spill from the hockey grounds.The kew Boulie is fine, rough yes but sh!t happens. The complete pitch black is ok. Except for joggers who feel the need to run in the bike lane towards on coming traffic!!!:eek: , come on, on the footpath.:)
