sternI vaguely remember reading that Stern is a vegy. I could be wrong, but if so, I guess he'd then be inclined to lean toward the 'we don't need protein' research.

carbs, carbs, carbshave you seen as talking about The Omnivore guy? He's a Melbrunian with a 'paleo' website (for want of a better term). He wrote a book, then cracked the shits coz it sold crap, so he took all the info off his site.
He's also a big iron pumper and a personal trainer.

I'll get his book soon.

I think the plan is if they chuck out all the ammo's, & try & score some more UCI points....& invite continental teams etc...they have half a chance of turning it into some sort of 1 day classic....as much as I've loved doing it.....the world longest single day road race, with ammo's?.....I think if they muck around with the dates & make it attractive to O/S teams they might go alright....still a pity to muck about with 100 odd years of history....history that I'm part of.....
There were only 146 entries last year and 123 starters.
Can't see it working. Too far for the euros to travel and no Pro (other than the Aussies-the race means something to them) wants to ride 300kms outside of the main road season.
What are they going to do, get those crap Asian continental teams out? Those Japs at the Sun Tour last year were cannon fodder at best. Even the Malaysian roadies who looked on the up a couple of years ago are crap again. A couple of teams with Poles and slovenians that no one has heard of and thats about it.

There were only 146 entries.they should have it the other way around so there's more chance of a tailwind. Not many easterlies at that time of year :)

Hmm. They did years and years ago. I think the Warrnambool shire chuck in a fair wad of cash to have it finish in Warny.
I followed the Lakes Entrance to Dandenong that was brought back for one year in the late 80's. Bulldog won it. 300km+, on some of the deadest roads in the country. Most of the roads between Lakes and Traralgon are made of that river stone stuff. Haemorroid inducing day that was....:p

Hmm.pI think Dean Woods still holds the record for the fastest race. Must've been a tailwind. :)
Didn't Besanko have a bad prang a couple years ago, or am I thinking of somebody else?

The Dellrays at the Annandale.
They started like it was Motown 196?
and went upward from there
and upward
and even further upward.
Good god.
See it, buy it, steal it. Look em up on youtube. Now.
I'm gonna pull out all my old Stax and Volt and Tamla vinyl and fight the cops off at the breach.
Screw capitalism. I'm gonna stay up all night and still have the best day of my life.
Oh and 75 gear inches hurts after all multiples of 13 frosted malt beverages.

it just continues to amaze me just how many people just dont understand how important protein is..specifically full branch chain amino acids. everyone ive come across in cycling terms and what i keep reading in forums and the like is carb, carb, carb, carb and carb and a bit of protein.
if your even semi serious about cycling and your not getting 2gms of protein per kg of body weight per day then your a clown - period.http://cyclingforums.com/images/smilies/mad.gifI don't go 2 grams, I don't want kidney problems later in life. I do gat 1.5 grams/Kilo body mass though and an addidtional 0.75 grams fat/kilo and 1.0 grams carbs/Kilo. Seems to work for me!:D

Seems to work for me!:Dthe kidney thing is a bit of a myth. The protein doesn't cause problems, but it may affect people with existing kidney problems
this ain't referenced, but it's the first thing i found in a few seconds :)

"the reference study (2) states that "there is no
published evidence that strength athletes have increased incidence of
renal (kidney) disease." So, excess protein does not cause kidney stones
or other kidney problems unless there is a pre-existing problem."

"Protein does not cause kidney problems unless you already have kidney problems. (How many times do we need to keep saying this? Sadly, most laymen still believe this old myth.)"

http://www.t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=4620242 questions: What are your medical quals and or your qualifacations as a dietitian?
I am currently a Nursing Student, and have just gone through my Anatomy and Physiology Courses and specifically focused nutritional and dietary training. I am targeting Sports Physiology and Diet as a career path as well as Bariatrics. Granted, you can avoid the kidney damage with sufficient hydration to reduce the concentration of urea produced by an ultra high protein diet, but fractional proteins that the body can't uptake as well as the excess nitrogen and urea in the bloodstream do stress the kidneys. The additionall fluid intake required also increase the amount of electrolyte supplementation you need to do. What you cited was a blog and usenet discussion whaich were actually about Amino Acid Supplementation for body builders rather than the end result of excess protein intake, sorry to burst your bubble... (Also not trying to hit you either, 531.). I'm not referring to kidney stones, rather damage to the structure of the kidney itself re the second cite, from Washington.edu, which I would consider a citable source.
All the body is capable of taking up in form of protein is approximately 1.5 gram/kg body mass, any more simply becomes excess filtrate through the Urinary Tract. This amount also gives quite sufficient excess Amino Acids to promote Amino Acid uptake during the sleep period mentioned in the usenet discussion.

2 questions.unqualified: 2/3 of a nutrition degree at La Trobe uni, Melb -- deferred, and targeting nothing. :p At the moment I just wanna ride my bike and pay of my Visa card
as I intimated, I just grabbed the first couple of quotes of the net I could find. I can't be stuffed looking for cited this and that. I've read cited stuff, we've all read cited stuff, and I'm sure you know there's canyon loads of research out there supporting whatever we want -- all sides of every argument ever!
so, what usually happens in this situation is that one person goes 'bang' with a couple of referenced articles off Pub Med, then the other person comes back with "oh yeah? This journal article is 6 months newer than yours." And it goes on and on. I can't be bothered, can you? It takes a lot of time to discuss something properly, coz you've gotta read the articles to make sure they're what you're looking for; maybe even check the references and read them, too.......etc.
I argued with some vegetarians on Bike Forums, and it's a waste of time, because it's very rare that anyone changes their mind, even when confronted the best available data.

Didn't mean to "stuff" you, by the way, but perhaps between the two of us, we'll get some people interested enough to do some looking themselves, eh?:D

I'm getting this strange feeling of deja vu...... all these user names I recognise from the other place are cropping up in threads all over the place on this site. A lot of them have Jul 2006 join dates. http://cyclingforums.com/images/smilies/confused.gif
We actually got a post from Joe Gardner over at The Other Place regarding the sudden uptick of members here, of which I am one:
"I made the decsion to remove her blue star, she made the decision to leave the community.
I wish her the best of luck in the future, she was a great asset to the community over the last few years. She will be missed."
Since we're all separated from one another by a common language, let me translate:
Joe called her on her stuff, demoted her, and since she couldn't delete Joe, she huffed off. (I hope she f*cks off, too....but I digress....)
So, Expatriate, when are you going to recreate TAT over 'there'?
