I am having a problem with the derailer as I cannot shift into the lowest gear, the shift control knob will only shift to the second lowest gear. How do I adjust so that I can use the lowest gear. Also when I shift to the highest gear on the rear sprocket the shifter puts the chain off the gears and I have to physically put the chain back on the sprocket. How do I adjust this problem? It seems like I have to move the whole shifter towards the sprocket more. What adjustments do I need to do to remedy these problems? Note I have a 21 speed bike. The front sprockets seem to be ok.

It sounds like the derailleur limit screws aren't set correctly. These determine the end-points of the derailleur cage movement, and would cause this sort of thing to happen.

A few things to read up on about how to fix it here:

Thanks I will give it a try.Ok, now have have both the low and high sprockets working. But now I noticed when I shift from the midrange sprocket to a smaller sprocket it seems to jump 2 gears. This happens from the 3rd smallest sprocket and jumps to the smallest sprocket (high). Note: this doesnot happen everytime that I shift only in the midrange and then the 3rd to smallest sprocket. I noticed that the deraileur doesnot make the full shift and then when I push my finger controls to shift again the deraileur moves 2 sprockets. Is there another adjustment to make and where is it made? Thanks

Yep, there is a tension adjustment for the cable which is to fix the kind of problem you're having now. You can fine-tune this with the little barrel adjuster on the derailleur where the cable comes in. Do only small adjustments one at a time; like 1/2 or 1/4 turn before seeing what effect it has.

Turning the barrel counter-clockwise increases cable tension (making it climb 'up' the larger cassette cogs easier), clockwise decreases it.

From what it sounds like, you may have a little too much tension in the cable.

Check out the "index setting" section of that Park Tool web page I linked to earlier for more comprehensive info on how to go about adjusting this.
