I picked up kind of a strange vibe emanating from Phil last night during the "Defining Moments"
interview with Lance on OLN. (Very different from Paul's.)
Anybody else notice it, and if so, how would you characterize it? I'm curious if my impression was
shared by others.

Yeah, I noticed it. If I were to verbalize what I thought about it I would simply be projecting my
bias. Now that you are warned, I took it as if both Phil and Paul were a bit worried about handling
Armstrong. I think Armstrong looked a bit guarded and I think all 3 of them were just a bit
concerned with how it would go. Maybe things were said before it was aired, like don't talk about
"x" or someone farted.

Yeah, I did. But I just chalked it up to Phil being a bit of a kook. He stomped all over Paul
Sherwen's lines, and even walked on some of Armstrong's as well. I thought he was just trying too
hard, rather than letting the interview happen.
Mind you, I definitely got the feeling he didn't buy Armstrong's "my break was on" Alpe d'Huez
excuse. And he wasn't the only not buying it ....

Phil must have interviewed LA a dozen or two times in the past. I couldn't figure out why he was so
uptight. It was hard to reconcile with the motor mouthed loon we regularly hear gabbing away in the
commentary box.
I thought his tone bordered on the funereal. Like there was a dead body in the next room and he was
speaking in an almost hushed voice. Very little warmth or humor towards LA. If I hadn't known that
LA had just won his 5th, from Phil's attitude and body language I would have thought he'd just been
soundly defeated and they were doing an obligatory post mortem.
I know that Phil picked Jan to win & LA is not a favorite with him, but he would have to be
remarkably unprofessional to let that effect him in that way.
Re: the break rubbing. I doubt Lance made it up, but I think he probably laid more significance on
it than it deserved. He was off form. but he needed to lay it on some external factor that could be
tweaked away. NHL goalie Patrick Roy was the same way.

The best part of the interview was when Lance said: "I really don't like Champagne, it gives me a
headache", and Phil said, "me too, but usually after about 5 bottles".
And Lance said: pregnant pause...nothing.

Parts of Phil's commentary -- the lead-in to commercials, etc -- were most likely filmed out of sync
from the rest of the live stuff, so they felt "different" because of that. Hasty, rough, different
pace, and so on. I definitely noticed those sections sticking out.
As to the rest -- Phil did (as someone else mentioned) step on Paul's commentary and some of Lance's
response at times. Just as he stepped on Paul many times during the live stage commentary this year.
There was a definite and obvious difference in *all* of Phil's work this year. Simply put, I think
he's losing his touch, either because of age or over-familiarity/"laziness" (I don't mean to sound
cruel to Phil with either of those alternatives. I'm a long, long, long-time Pfan of Phil, and enjoy
him still. It wouldn't be le Tour without him...) This year he made more mistakes (mis-identifying
riders, mis- calling the proximity of the finish line, missing a move for some time after it
happened, or over-hyping a non-move on the off-chance it might happen to actually be something) than
he's made in the past several years combined. Personally, I just get into it and enjoy it as the
latest evolution of Phil-ness, coming into my home like a GRAND PRIX MOTORCAR!!

I was particularly disappointed that he interrupted LANCE's answer about things that were going
wrong, at the top of the interview. Probably a production limitation, but I wanted to hear the
whole story.
