Custom Wheels
I'm trying to get some custom wheels . Right now, it's because of my status as a clydesdale. I've been able to get an initial response from Joe Young and Peter White but I've not been able to get beyond that to ordering...can't get any response from another site whose url is something like "oddsnends".......i'm just wondering if my email is the snag [having some trouble with my spam filter] or if any of you have had success with Joe Young, Peter White or any other custom wheel builders? Thanks in advance.

The website is:
www.oddsandendos.com
I have never ordered from them or seen their wheels in person. Unless you want something particularly exotic, either of your first choices have very good reputations.
Expect to pay a fair price for high quality hand built wheels as it won't be cheap. I gather that you are already doing this, but if you are a Clydesdale you should choose durability and reliability over light weight.

Many LBS build wheels, and some are good at it. I've had fine results from wheels built by two different LBS.
For a heavyweight, say up to 300 lbs, believe a 36 spoke Ultegra hub built up with the appropriate spokes and rim would give you fine service for not a lot of money.

I am a custom wheel builder that specializes in touring, cross, and clydesdale.
What are you looking for?
How much do you weigh?
What OLD rear drop out spacing?
What width tires will you use?
What type of riding?
What budget?
What time frame?

Homey,
I just had Dave Orne build me a custom set of wheels. I am 206 so I wanted something that was duarable. Dave hooked me up with some Beautiful Velocity rims with Dura Ace hubs. I just received them and can't wait to get the Velo Plugs so I can give them spin. I ordered the plugs from him as an afterthought. I just couldn't allow sticky rim tape to touch these rims.
Date ordered 8-31, date received 9-11!
Dave,
Good onya Mate! I can't thank you enough.
I'm a 'clyde' too, (about 250) and just had my LBS build me up a set of custom wheels. The builders you mentioned have an excellent reputation, as does Mike Garcia at 'Odds and Endos'. Any of those guys would be a good choice. For me, I had my LBS build my wheels because of their close proximity and quality of work. I wanted something different, that was old school pro for my '91 Tommasini, so I managed to snag a set of Ambrosio 'Excellence' rims in the hard to find red anodise color. I like the name "Excellence" because thats what the rims are, friggen excellent. With the 'Record' hubs I got off e-bay I had them build them up for me with DT swiss spokes, 3x with brass nipples. Have about 1000 miles on them, and are still just as true as when they built them. I really cant say enough about the Ambrosio rims. They are gorgeous on my bike, with the red anodise, and a world apart from all the 'Open Pro' and 'Ksyrium' wheels everyone seems to have.
just my 02 cents

Actually custom built wheels that do not use exotic components are cheaper than typical boutique wheelsets of a similar quality. The reason why the prebuilt stuff is so prevalent is that there are large profit margins to be made.
I had a pretty good buying experience from Joe Young with a set of DT Swiss wheels this year.
The full DT Swiss wheels I ordered are light even with the higher spoke count that I feel gives me a little more comforting feeling while being out in the middle of rural areas.

The LBS that rebuilt my Ultegra hubs last time pushed heavily to get me to "upgrade" to SLs at $850 retail. The owner really tried to convince me that I'd climb a lot faster on the SLs, but finally gave up when I told him I'm only a club rider and wouldn't spend that much to save seconds on local hills. He ended up selling me spokes, rims, and labor. The build quality seemed good, and the wheels stayed true for about 5K miles until I sold this bike this summer.
Topolino Wheelsets are known to work really well for Clydesdale Type Racers. Maybe you can give them a look. I have heard really good things about their wheelsets. A little pricey, but worth every penny from what I hear.

update....had originally decided to get the joe young option, really quality and heavy duty with phil hubs.....price was $791 + shipping....then looked closely at my bank account and canceled the order. Peter White cycles has a set (ith dura ace hub)for $554 + shipping and excel cycles in colorado has a mavic open pro cd with ultegra hub for $360 including shipping. All are 36 spokes front and rear, 3x lacing....all are good but money is an issue. The big difference is the cost of the hubs so that's what i have to decide.......they've all been really responsive and patient with my many questions so they're all good to work with and very worthwhile. If only I could find the money..........
I just got a set of DT Swiss 240 S Wheel set from Performance for 412.00 with tax and two day shipping from Performance...They were true and ready to go out of the box..I sold my ksyrium elites and now ride theese wheels..which are much better...they dont look sexy but they are quick
If money is an issue go for the Ultegras with mavic open pros. They will do just fine. Upgrade to Dura Ace if you have the money.
